Champion Enterprises, Inc., the modular home builder based out of Troy, Mich., announced late last week that it would be closing the doors of its Berthoud facility, operating as Genesis Homes and Summit Crest Homes, by the end of July. Champion, which is also closing another facility in Woodland, Calif., announced the decision as a result of declining sales revenues.

A first quarter earnings statement released by the company last April showed revenues of $105.2 million in the first quarter of 2009,
down from $296.7 million for the first quarter of 2008, a decrease of 64.5 percent. The company’s net loss for the first quarter of 2009 was $17.6 million.

Champion owns a total of 27 manufacturing facilities with five in Canada, another five in the United Kingdom and 17 in the U.S, employing 4,000 workers worldwide. Genesis and Summit Crest homes, owned by parent company Champion, is located on the north side of Berthoud and maintains two buildings on 21 acres.

The closure will put 82 workers out of jobs. Although most of the employees will likely not be eligible for transfer to another facility, a final decision of which employees will be offered relocation has not been made.

Summit Crest and Genesis homes will wrap-up production before the end of July and will close their doors at month end.
