Fascism Has Come to Roost in America

OpEdNewslogo Fascism Has Come to Roost in America

By Willy Scanion

As the famous American novelist Sinclair Lewis – who was the first American to be awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature – once said, “When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying the cross.” The ever-rising culture of militarism in America and the never-ending conflict of war in far away countries like Iraq, Afghanistan, and Pakistan and hundreds of military bases the military industrial complex needs to support these conflicts, will only further fuel America’s own fascism movement. From support of the State of Israel and its apartheid against the Palestinian people to the murders of more than 1,000 civilians in Pakistan by American drone strikes, to the extrajudicial murder by drone and without indictment of American citizens abroad since 9/11,   to the militarism of our police and their attacks and efforts to ignore the basic civil liberties guaranteed every person in America via our Constitution. Yes, Fascism has arrived in America.   We can see it every time a politician gets up to speak and we can hear it in the rhetoric that is used from media reports to speeches. We used to call America our country, but now the official term is the “Homeland”. Much like Hitler’s used the word the “Fatherland”. I cringe every time I hear that word.

George W. Bush used the rhetoric of fear through lies to bring us to invade Afghanistan and Iraq. Obama has used the same rhetoric on May 22nd in his speech at the National Defense University. Mr. Obama said: “our nation is still threatened by terrorists.   From Benghazi to Boston, we have been tragically reminded of that truth.   But we have to recognize that the threat has shifted and evolved from the one that came to our shores on 9/11.   With a decade of experience now to draw from, this is the moment to ask ourselves hard questions — about the nature of today’s threats and how we should confront them”. He went on to state: “”.our nation is still threatened by terrorists.   From Benghazi to Boston, we have been tragically reminded of that truth.   But we have to recognize that the threat has shifted and evolved from the one that came to our shores on 9/11.   With a decade of experience now to draw from, this is the moment to ask ourselves hard questions — about the nature of today’s threats and how we should confront them.” America has no business interfering in the internal affairs of other countries unless it is invited. In Pakistan today its Supreme Court ruled that American drone strikes within Pakistan’s borders are illegal and an infringement on its sovereignty and therefore should be shot down by the military. Americans should not preach about freedom of religious expression and speech on one hand while denying another country to govern its citizens in accordance with their laws and culture. This exactly what Adolf Hitler did when he annexed Austria and Poland.

In my On Linguistical Examination Of Media Reports And Speeches, plus the actions and reactions of America evolution towards fascism, I have found several repetitive characteristics that identify America has crossed the line towards becoming a Fascist nation.

1. Powerful and Continuing Nationalism – Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottos, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.

2. Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights – Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of “need.” The marathon Bomber manhunt in Watertown, MA.: that forcibly removed people from their homes without warrants to search.   The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, such as at Guantanamo prison where 165 prisoners have been held for more than 10 years without being charged of a crime. The assassination of Anwar Al Awalki and his son in Yemen by American drones without the right of due process under our Constitution to the recent murder of an acquaintance of the Boston Marathon Bomber in Orlando Florida by the FBI, to the American governments support of Israel’s illegal siege of Gaza and the thousands of human rights violations committed against them.

3. Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause – READ MORE
