The Berthoud Wrestling team took third place in the 4A region 1, 17 team, regional tournament held on Friday and Saturday at Greeley Central High School. Windsor chalked up the most team points (222.5), with Greeley West (185) coming in second, and Berthoud close behind with 172. After all the dust settled, five Spartan grapplers are heading off to battle it out at the Pepsi Center in the Annual State Wrestling tournament. Robbie Workman (130) and Alex Sadlo (135) came into the meet with first place rankings and won their championship matches to secure first place honors. Workman won in a decision over Jacob Atwood of Greeley Central 5-2 and Sadlo won over Aaron Schaffer of Longmont 10-6.
Marcus Lucero (140) and J.T. Pickert (215) took second, Lucero losing to Tyler Parker of Frederick and Pickert losing 6-4 to Jacob Arellano of Niwot. Casey Couch (189) came through with a third by a decision over Julian Cota 5-1 to secure his place at the State meet. Alex Kingsley, and Tyler Bethal came home with the fifth place regional title, but only the top four spots qualify for the state meet.
In the battle for 5th and 6th place at 119 lbs, Alex Kingsley, one of Berthoud’s freshman grapplers, out wrestled Windsor’s Nate Sobczak for the fifth place medal. Spartan Jessie Lyman (152) was taken down in an overtime by Forrest Wetterstrom from Longmont after an unpopular call from the referee brought a chorus of boos from the crowd. After working his way back up through the bracket to the semi finals, Lyman’s hopes for a state spot were shattered by what many spectators felt was a reckless whistle.
Cooper Wynn (145) came back after an mid season injury and finished with two tournament pins in the regional meet, one in the preliminary round and another in the consolation semi final round. Billy Schump (285) pinned Luke Biedscheid from Fossil Ridge in the second period of the first round, but fell to Frederick’s Austin Pratt. In the consolation bracket, Schump came back and pinned Fort Morgan’s 285 pound wrestler only to fall to Greeley West’s Matt Murdock in a decision win in the consolation semi finals.
With the three-day State wresting meet coming up in a week, the five state bound Berthoud wrestlers will be working harder than ever to prepare. The best wrestlers in 2-A, 3-A, 4-A, and 5-A division schools from all over Colorado will be there, ready to battle it out on the mat.
