Gene Kiehn (December 1, 1935 – April 26, 2010)

Gene Kiehn, 74, of Berthoud died April 26 at the Berthoud Living Center.

Gene was born to Fred and Lottie Kiehn on December, 1, 1935 at their farm home east of Berthoud.

He was student at Whipple School during his grade school years and considered it a privilege to have attended a rural school where all the farm kids knew each other. He liked to reminisce about walking to school along the country roads with his friends. Gene graduated from Berthoud High School in 1954.

Gene Kiehn and Carolyn Straight were married on April 7, 1957, and moved to the farm southeast of Berthoud in December of that year. They raised their four children there and it became their permanent home.

Gene was never uncertain about his occupation. He loved to farm and began at an early age to learn from his father how to plant, cultivate, irrigate and harvest. He also milked cows and fed cattle.

He was active in agricultural organizations. He was on the board of the Big Thompson Soil Conservation District, served as secretary of the Bennett and Kerr Ditch Company and was a member of the Sugar Beet Growers Association.

Gene served in the Army National Guard from 1954 to 1957. He was elected to the Board of Directors of the Berthoud Fire Protection District and held that position for many years. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Berthoud for sixty years.

He is survived by his wife Carolyn; daughters Carrie (Kent) Davis and Annie (Doug) Arnstad; sons Matt and Rob, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brother Niel.

Funeral Services were held at 10:00 AM, Friday, April 30, 2010 at First United Methodist Church of Berthoud. Interment  in Greenlawn Cemetery in Berthoud.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Building Fund of the First United Methodist Church of Berthoud.
