The Lady Spartans

The Lady Spartans opened up the scoring with Danielle Wikre making two free throws in the first minuet of play. The visitors from Prairie View soon tied the score and added two free throws to take a 2 point lead. Amy Ekart put the Spartans even again. Prairie View took the lead again only to be  matched again.

Berthoud played catch-up all the first quarter and had it not been for Danielle Wikre, they would not have been able to keep up. Wikre was everywhere the ball was. She had several rebounds, several steals and several near steals and kept the opposition off balance. She was also a star on offense contributing a significant portion of the scoring, especially in the first half.

The first quarter ended with the teams tied at 12.

Period two started off much the same as period one with the Thunderhawks taking the lead and Berthoud catching up. Berthoud finally took the lead on a Julia Perry jump shot after almost 5 minutes of play. After nearly two scoreless minutes, Wikre added two more points to take a 20 – 16 advantage. The Lady Spartans the had what might be there best two minutes this year. Wikre made a 2-pointer, Ekart made her jump shot and was fouled in the process, adding another point with a free throw. Wikre closed out the set with a lay-up and the Spartans went to the locker room with a 28 – 22 lead.

Berthoud did not let up in he second half. A strong defense in period 3 gave up only one point while added 8 to the Spartan tally. Both teams added 14 points in the last period, Wikre and Perry adding the final 3 points on free throws with less than a minute to play.

The team put on a great performance this evening after some rather lackluster games the last two weeks.

‘”We finally played good defense the second half,” said coach Randy Earl. “We need the defense because we can’t always depend on our offense.”

The girls meat the 21-2 Pueblo East Eagles on Friday night. Pueblos it the third seed in the Tanya Haave Region. The games will be played at Valor Christian in Highlands Ranch. Valor Christian will be playing Castle View who upset Fossil Ridge 39-36.
