After trailing for much of the game, the Berthoud girls pulled out a win this evening by besting the Sterling Tigers 38 -35.
The Tigers controlled the tip and scored quickly. Amy Loberg came right back and tied the score. The next four minutes was all Sterling as they ran their score to 9 while Berthoud was unable to find the hoop. The Tiger defense kept Berthoud passing the ball outside the circle and the few shots Berthoud did take bounced off the rim. Amy Ekart made her first basket of the evening with 1:30 left in the quarter. Her 3-pointer made the score 5-9 and that is how the quarter ended.
Berthoud came back in the second period and briefly took the lead at 13-11. The Tigers then made 6 unanswered points. Both teams attempted, and made, a lot of 3-point shots. Berthoud added two free throws and the half ended with Berthoud trailing 16-17.
The third period was much like the second. Berthoud briefly took a 24-21 lead four minutes into the quarter but two minutes of play later, the Tigers were back on top 27-29. Berthoud tied the came on two free throws by Stephanie Heaton and added six more to lead 35-29 at the end of the third.
Sterling pulled to with in one point with 1:30 gone in the fourth period. A three pointer by Ekart gave Berthoud 38 and a free throw by Morgan Colburn put the Tigers at 35 with 5 minutes remaining in the game. That turned out to be nearly all the scoring in the period. Despite frantic activity by both teams, the final basket came at the final buzzer.
The Spartans continue to struggle with offense. They have a very low percentage in their lay-ups and jump shots the last three games. Three-point baskets are saving the day. Over half of this evenings scoring was 3-pointers.
Regional play is over, the state tournament starts next week, and brackets will be announced on Saturday.
