Lady Spartans fall to Fossil Ridge

The Spartans on defense against Fossil Ridge

The first half was a defensive battle and low scoring game. Neither team seemed to be able to work the ball into scoring position and the few shots that were attempted missed their mark. The first score did not come until 4:47 had elapsed in the first quarter when Fossil Ridge sank a 3-point goal. Berthoud’s first score came with 2:57 remaining on a free throw by Kacey Fagler. Julia Perry evened the score at 3-3 with one minute to go. In the final minute of the period, the Saber Cats made another 3-pointer, Danielle Wikre responded with a 3-point shot for the Spartans and the Cats added yet another 3-points. The quarter ended with the Spartans down by 3, all of Fossil Ridges points coming from 3-point field goals.

Berthoud started off period 2 with a 3-point goal by Julia Perry. Fossil Ridge took the lead again with a lay-up. Perry tied the game again by making two free throws. The Cats took the lead again with two unanswered field goals and Berthoud never caught up again. Berthoud finished the half with Ekart making two of two free throws and a field goal. Sarah Loberg made one of two free throws and the half ended with the Spartans down by one basket, 16-18.

The second half started off with Fossil Ridge adding one point on a free throw. Ekart came back with two points to keep the game close. Fossil Ridge then took a 7 point lead on a field goal, a free throw and a 3-pointer. Berthoud responded with a basket by Ekart and two by Fagler. The score was 24-25 with 1:47 to go in the third but that did not last long as the Cats made three 3-point goals in the final minute and half to lead 24-33 going into the last period.

The Saber Cats scored first in period four on another 3-point goal and Berthoud never got closer that 10 points after that. Berthoud tried to work the full court press that was successful last game, but the Cats took advantage of the thin coverage under the basket and converted two quick lay-ups. The Spartans never quit trying, making the final basket as the buzzer sounded. To little to late, Cats win 37-49.
