Safety Upgrades to Patrol Fleet

The Larimer County Sheriff’s Office has approved a safety upgrade to its patrol car fleet in the form of blue and yellow reflective striping on the rear of new vehicles. The markings dramatically improve visibility of the vehicles and improve safety for the public as well as for deputies.

Last year, Sheriff Justin Smith took notice of the high visibility red and yellow reflective markings that Poudre Fire Authority added to their fleet of vehicles to make them more visible to motorists at fire and rescue scenes. The Sheriff had expressed concerns in the past about patrol vehicles being visible during incidents when using full emergency lighting was not possible.

All newly purchased patrol vehicles will be outfitted with the new markings. It has not been determined if funds exist to retrofit older patrol cars in the fleet. The markings add approximately $80 to $100 to the cost of the new patrol vehicles.
