Berthoud Police along with personnel from the Berthoud Fire Protection District and Thompson Valley EMS were called to the 1700 block of Larimer County Road 15C (north Fourth Street) at 3:49 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 27 in response to a report of a man with a gunshot wound to the head. Upon arrival, officers found 34-year-old Timothy Stieb “sitting propped against tree, unresponsive and not breathing,” stated a press release issued by BPD earlier today.

Stieb was pronounced dead at the scene at 3:59 p.m. The Larimer County Coroner’s Office has confirmed that Stieb died of a single gunshot wound to the head, which was believed to be self-inflicted.

BPD Chief Glen Johnson said the report was called in by a resident in the area who noticed a man sitting under a tree off the roadway, while mowing his lawn. When the resident realized the man had not moved a couple of hours later, he went to check on him and discovered Stieb had apparently shot himself.

The address on Stieb’s Colorado driver’s license lists a Fort Collins address, although Johnson noted he was believed to have been visiting family in the area. Stieb’s family has been notified but no indication as to why the man may have decided to take his life was given.
