LONGMONT — Tom Pane spared a game-closing 17-2 run as the host Longmont Trojans pulled away for a 63-49 victory over Berthoud in boys’ basketball action Friday night at Longmont High School.Berthoud (8-10, 8-7 4A Northern Conference) had grabbed the lead — its fourth of the game — on a Shane Hart layup with 3 minutes, 20 seconds left in regulation, but managed just one field goal the rest of the way.
Until then the game was never out of control. Though Longmont jumped out to a nine-point lead early, 12-3, on the heels of a 10-1 run, Berthoud retaliated in the second quarter with a 12-2 charge of its own to take its only lead of the half 18-16 on a Jeff Shields layup. But a Syd Donaldson 3-pointer gave the Trojans a 19-18 halftime advantage.
Longmont jumped out to a six-point lead in the third, but just as quickly the Spartans score nine of the next 10 points for a 36-34 lead early in the fourth. Berthoud got up four, but couldn’t put the game away. Then Longmont did.
“I was real happy with the fact that we played an entire game. We never got ourselves way in a hole. We came out right from the start and stuck around. We were in the game the whole way,” Berthoud head coach Pete Scheck said.
Pane, who scored a game-high 21 points, scored on a layup of his own to give Longmont (14-4, 11-4) a 48-47 lead. On the play, Spartans junior Joel Maly came down awkwardly on his left ankle. He immediately left the game. The injury doesn’t appear serious, according to Scheck, who expects Maly to be ready for Tuesday’s regular-season finale at home against Northridge.
Tevan McIntire hit two free throws with 1:58 left to give the Trojans a three-point lead. Then Pane stole the ball twice from Berthoud point guard Ryan Barron on the dribble up court and scored to push Longmont’s lead to seven. The game was all but over from that point as Berthoud was forced to foul, but Longmont hit 9-of-12 foul shots the rest of the way to stretch its lead to 14 by game’s end.
Syd Donaldson added 11 points for Longmont. The Spartans were led by Shields’ 16 points. Hart added nine and Barron eight.
