Markey Votes To Block Pay Raise For Congress

[1]House passes measure 402-15

Washington D.C.—Congresswoman Betsy Markey today voted to block the scheduled 2011 pay raise for Members of Congress. Rep. Markey has repeatedly fought against Congressional pay raises and co-sponsored legislation earlier this year to stop the 2011 raise.

“With unemployment still high and the economy recovering from a recession, families across Colorado are making tough decisions and cutting spending to make ends meet. Congress should be no different,” said Rep. Markey. “For Congress to give itself a pay raise at a time when so many hardworking Americans are suffering is unconscionable.”

In 1989, Congress approved a process that provides lawmakers with an automatic pay raise unless they vote specifically to reject the raise. Last year, Rep. Markey was successful in blocking the FY 2010 pay raise after voting for similar legislation, H.R. 156, which also garnered bi-partisan support.
