The Berthoud High School Improvement Team (SIT) met on Dec. 10. Principal Leonard Sherman reported the addition to the high school is tentatively scheduled for the initial walkthrough on Jan. 7 with the new gym and science classes ready for use on Jan. 19.
He also reported BHS has been approved for a pilot solar program; the Thompson School District has a goal of using more solar energy and this project will be important in analyzing the viability of implementing similar solar programs throughout the district. Students will be involved in the design and installation of a roof top panel.
Principal Sherman also reminded the committee about the upcoming aviation class being offered to students and the community. The class will be held on Tuesdays, from 3:30 – 5:30 p.m. beginning on Jan. 20. Interested students may sign up at the counselor’s office. Community members should call (970) 613-7700.
English teacher, Diana Benkert reported on the Literacy Action Plan. This includes ten specific building initiatives for enhancing Berthoud’s literacy instruction. A report was read discussing possible strategies for meeting the goals set by the nationally mandated, “Response to Intervention” or RTL. RTL is a method of academic intervention used in the United States with a purpose of providing early intervention to children who are having difficulty learning. Each department head is examining their current practices to gauge whether they meet RTL goals and standards.
The next SIT meeting is scheduled to meet on Wednesday, Jan. 7. Students, parents and the community are welcome to attend.
