Clarence Otto Greckel, age 93 passed away Friday, October 28, 2011 at Berthoud Living Center in Berthoud, Co. His memorial service was held at Viegut Funeral Home in Loveland, on Friday November, 4, 2011 at 10 a.m.

Clarence was born December 1, 1917 to Otto and Martha Greckel in Bloomfield, Nebraska. There he attended school through the 8th grade when, as with many during those years, his help was needed on the family farm. He enlisted in the United States Navy in 1942 and served our country aboard the USS Denebola. Clarence was honorably discharged September 17, 1945 as Shipfitter 1st class. 1944 was the year he married Mildred Lorraine “Poody” Erion. Together they had four children and raised their family in Bloomfield Nebraska until 1966 when they purchased a motel in Liberal, Kansa and became owner/operators for the next nine years. In 1975 Clarence and Mildred sold out to purchase another motel in Smith Center, Kansas and to start an art and framing operation. Clarence enjoyed the new “hobby” of framing and matting artwork while operating the motel until 1984 when they retired to Berthoud, Co where much of their family lived. Clarence had been married to Mildred for 67 years when she died in August 2011.

He is survived by his son Michael Dean Greckel of Firestone and daughters Candace Davis and husband C.L., of Holcomb, Kansas, Cynde Gaiser and husband Jeff, of Scottsbluff, Nebraska and Julie Hoekstra and husband Scott, of Westminster, Colorado. Also there are seven grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandson. Surviving also are his two sisters Hazel Weichmann of Rapid City, South Dakota and Lily Ann Sage of Yankton, South Dakota, two sister in laws, Noreen Greckel and Laura Lou Greckel and many nieces and nephews.

Preceding him in death are his wife Mildred “Poody” Greckel and two brothers, Galen Greckel and Vernon Greckel.
