Clyde Raymond Briggs

Clyde Raymond Briggs, of Johnstown, died Aug. 4, 2011, surrounded by his family at the North Colorado Medical Center hospice unit, following injuries from a fall Aug. 1. He was 60.

A proud Colorado native, Mr. Briggs was born in Leadville on April 16, 1951, to Shirley (Roberts) and Clyde Briggs, Sr. He graduated in 1969 from Arvada High School, and in 1977 from Intermountain Bible College in Grand Junction. On April 26, 1970, he married Ardis Schoonover in Arvada. They met at a church youth group. In 1972, he was inducted into the U.S. Army and was stationed in West Berlin. It was at this time that Clyde began to develop his love of photography.

His first job in journalism was at the San Miguel Basin Forum on the Western Slope. It was at this time he and Ardis decided to buy a newspaper of their own.

In 1980, the family moved to Johnstown, where they purchased The Johnstown Breeze. Together, Clyde and Ardis ran the paper until 1997 and raised their four children, Seth, Joy, Luke and Faith. They also started the Berthoud Banner, which became the Berthoud Recorder. In the 1980s, he served as a trustee on the Johnstown Town Board. At the time of his death, he was working at Lowe’s in Greeley.

He is survived by his wife; children; eight grandchildren; a brother; and three sisters.

He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Luke.

Services will be Tuesday, Aug. 9. There will be a motorcycle procession at 9:30 a.m., beginning at 3J’s Coffee House in Johnstown, which will travel to Resurrection Fellowship, 6502 E. Crossroads Blvd., southeast of the Budweiser Events Center. Services will be at 10:30 a.m. at Resurrection.
