Odyssey of the Mind Comes to Berthoud

See how local youth have designed and built NASA-sponsored Earth Trek vehicles that have to visit four locations within different environments and changes their appearance at each location. Want to watch students teach a mechanical creature to act like a real mammal or bird and learn lessons while performing tasks. Just how much weight can an 18-gram balsa wood structure hold while absorbing shock waves? You might be surprised.

On Saturday, March 14, creative minds reveal their true natures at Berthoud High School during the “A” Tournament for Odyssey of the Mind. Teamwork and creativity are the tools used to successfully solve problems that showcase these local students’ abilities in competition.

Perhaps theater is more of an interest for you.  If so, come visit ancient Greece and watch an original performance about the Greek hero Heracles as he performs his 13th and lost labor and find out why it was lost in history. You can also watch a performance about a superstition actually coming true. Or watch the candy maker and his factory produce some healthy candy!

Creatively talented students making up 82 teams from the St. Vrain Valley, Thompson, Fort Collins, Sterling, Ovid, Buena Vista and Weld County school districts will converge in Berthoud, hoping to amaze and impress their panels of judges so their team can continue on to the Colorado Odyssey State tournament to be held April 18.

The North Regional tournament is open for viewing to the public, starting at 8 a.m. and running throughout the day. Awards ceremonies for the primary teams will be held at noon and 3:45 p.m. depending on whether or not the teams competed in morning or afternoon sessions. Immediately following the afternoon primary ceremony, there will be an air band competition to rock the kids until time for the eagerly anticipated awards ceremony, beginning at approximately 5 p.m.

Competition winners from March 14 event will advance to the April 18 state tournament at Silver Creek High School in Longmont. Those advancing from State to Odyssey World Finals will then perform at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa on May 27-30.
