Tuesday, Feb. 24
An 18-year-old Berthoud High School student was charged with assault after punching a 16-year-old boy in the face while they were in the school parking lot. Angry because of the theft of his radar detector, the older boy had been told that it had been taken by the younger boy and accosted him in the parking lot, allegedly knocking him the ground and punching him in the face. The appearance of the injuries was severe enough that the paramedics advised his mother to take him to the doctor.
Police responding to suspicious circumstances in progress on Weld County Road 42 ½ in the wee hours of the morning found an open gate with a cut padlock and a shed missing a padlock. The investigation was turned over to the Weld County Sheriff’s office.
A caller reported he thought that a motor home parked near Mountain Ave. and Second St. was occupied by juveniles possibly responsible for break-ins around town. The motor home was registered to an address in Longmont.
A caller reported kids playing basketball in the road on south Eighth St. and was concerned someone would get hit on that busy street. An officer spoke to the kids and told them to be careful.
Free animals can cause trouble. In this case a Weld County Road 3 resident had picked up two animals from a lady in Parker who was giving them away. She did not get a brand inspection and one of the animals was not working out and to make matters worse the original owner showed up at 6:30 p.m. to take the animals back. The county resident felt the lady was trespassing and wanted her to come back in the daylight.
Wednesday, Feb. 25
A lady in the 900 block of Kansas Ave. was distraught over her missing cat and checked with the police department to see if they had picked up her pet. Police had not seen the animal, but it returned home two days later.
Police were notified after the fact about a fight between two teenage boys.
A motorist called to report a man walking down the middle of Highway 56 near Weld County Road 7 at 9:30 p.m. He was apparently trying to stop people because he had run out of gas and the motorist almost ran him over. Police responded quickly and found a vehicle with the hazard lights on, but no road walker.
Thursday, Feb. 26
Sometime during the previous evening, persons unknown threw eggs at a car parked in the 800 block of Sixth St. The egg attack caused a dent in the vehicle. The neighbor across the street was also egged. Police have added extra patrols in the area.
Police were unable to locate a big, black, un-groomed but non-aggressive dog reported running around Fickel Park at 11:30 a.m.
A 7:25 p.m. caller wanted to know if anyone had picked up or turned in a Chihuahua.
Friday, Feb. 27
Fortunately, an 11:17 a.m. alarm at Guaranty Bank was a false alarm.
A late evening, three-officer response to a local café for a reported assault led to one person being taken into custody. A report is to follow.
A resident of Mount Massive thought a blue Subaru with a big spoiler driving slowly around the neighborhood was suspicious. No report of police contact with the vehicle.
Saturday, Feb. 28
An early morning traffic stop on the 700 block of Welch Ave. led to the arrest of a wanted man. His arrest warrant was valid statewide.
Police stayed out of a confrontation between landlord and tenant in the 600 block of Mount Massive St.
A black Poodle running around Fourth St. and Capitol Ave. approached the mailman but did not approach the police when they came looking.
It was just after 10 p.m. when a caller complained of loud juveniles hanging out in the 1100 block of Madison Ave. They went inside when an officer arrived and mom and dad were present.
Sunday, Mar. 1
At 2:35 a.m., an officer attempted to stop a vehicle on east Iowa Ave. The license plate was unreadable due to stickers all over it. The car sped away and the officer observed beer being thrown out of the vehicle. The officer lost track of the vehicle, but found it again and attempted to make a stop but the vehicle sped away at speeds up to 100 mph. The officer located the vehicle again on County Road 13 and again it sped away. The officer apparently recognized the occupants as names were mentioned in the officer’s report and he identified a juvenile who was dropped off and out after curfew. The report says the vehicle matches the description of a car involved in vehicle trespasses. More help came but the report does not tell indicate if law enforcement ever stopped the car.
A Central City police officer called for help in locating a local woman who is a suspect in a theft at a casino.
Monday, Mar. 2
An investigation at the Berthoud High School was listed as possession of marijuana and drug paraphernalia after the items were found in a car registered in Johnstown.
