LONGMONT — Christie Heil’s two free throws with 1.9 seconds remaining sealed Skyline’s 44-41 4A Northern Conference victory over Berthoud, but not without a little controversy.

After trailing 42-32 with 2:16 remaining, the visiting Lady Spartans (4-8, 3-6) rallied to score the game’s next nine points to close within one point with 18 seconds left.

When Heil missed the front end of a one-and-one opportunity with 13 seconds left, Berthoud had a chance to win the game. But Danielle Wikre lost the ball out of bounds with 5.8 seconds remaining after what initially appeared to be a foul. No infraction was called and Skyline got possession of the ball.

Heil then drained two foul shots to give the host Falcons (5-7, 5-6) a 44-41 lead. Amy Ekart’s desperation 3-pointer never had a chance as the final buzzer sounded.

The loss is the Lady Spartans’ fifth straight dating back to a 31-25 home win vs. Frederick on Jan. 10.

Ekart finished with a game-high 19 points. Rose Heaphy had 11 rebounds.

Kylee Hoagland led Skyline with 13 points.
