The Spartan grapplers hit the road on Thursday to battle the Sterling Tigers in the last regional dual meet of the season. With Sterling’s three open weights and Berthoud’s eight state ranked wrestlers, the Tigers did not have much of a chance. The most exciting and well fought match of the night came from freshman, Austin Bending (103) who battled back and forth with Rock Tidwell from Sterling, only to come up short by one point in the last few seconds of the match (11-12). Robbie Workman (130) earned a technical fall early in the second period followed by a win from Alex Sadlo (135) 8 to 3. Marcus Lucero (140) won with a technical fall in the second period. Jesse Lyman (152), Casey Couch (189) and JT Pickert (215) added points to the board with pins early in their bouts. Alexander Kingsley (112), Tylor Bethel (119), and Billy Schump at HWT received forfeits. The final Score was Berthoud Spartans: 49 and Sterling Tigers: 25.
With one last chance to get some matches in before the regional meet next weekend, the Spartan Wrestlers took part in the 12 team Dual meet hosted by the Eaton Reds. The Berthoud grapplers had five meets against five teams from across the state including Erie, Holyoke, Skyline, Akron and Hayden.
Three Berthoud Spartans went undefeated for the day. Billy Schump, wrestling at heavy weight, pinned all five of this opponents in the first period of each match. Robbie Workman (130) and Casey Couch (189) went undefeated throughout the day. Casey Couch had a big win against former teammate and 5th ranked Jordan Martinez from Skyline that ended with Couch on top, 3-2. J.T. Pickert won his match against Skyline’s third state ranked Josh Brown in a triple overtime.
The Spartans came out 4 and 1 in the tournament, with big wins against Erie, 51-28, Skyline, 15-53, Akron 44-12, and Hayden 53-27. Berthoud‘s only team loss for the day was to 2-A, 3rd ranked Holyoke with the Spartans scoring 22 to Holyoke’s 33. This week the Spartans will be getting ready for the regional tournament at Greeley West on February 12 and 13.
