Spartans Matmen Dig into Reserves to Turn Back Windsor

WINDSOR — Jesse Lyman has been in this position before, wrestling on the varsity team. Corey Ellis, on the other hand, had not. But on Thursday night at Windsor High School, for various reasons, both were called upon to help Berthoud in its final match before the holiday break.

And as things would have it, both took the proverbial bull by the horns and helped the Spartans remain undefeated in dual-meet matches with a 41-28 win over the host Wizards.

Although, the Spartans were victorious, the match was anything but perfect. With the team dealing with injuries and suspensions, distractions may have played a part.

“Looks like we were little flat tonight. Ready for a break, get away for a bit. We’ve got to refocus again. We lost our focus a little bit with some different situations,” Berthoud head coach Scott Pickert said. “We just got to get back into the room and get our focus back and get back to working hard. If we wrestle like this at regionals, we’re definitely not going to do what we plan to do.”

Luckily, for one night, Berthoud had a backup plan in place to contend with the feisty Wizards.

With the Spartans holding on to a one-point lead, Lyman stepped onto the mat to face Windsor’s Troy Carroll. Lyman, who wrestled on the varsity team a year ago, found out three days earlier that he would be wrestling in place of 140-pound starter Brandyn Wahlert, who was suspended Dec. 15 along with Saul Anderson, for an alleged hazing incident.

In spite of the circumstances, Lyman was ready for the opportunity.

“I felt a lot of pressure because I knew that if I didn’t win that match it would be a close match for the next two. So I pretty much had to get a pin or win in that match,” said Lyman, who pinned Carroll in 1 minute, 8 seconds — one of three pinfalls for the Spartans.

His victory put Berthoud up 35-28 and Marcus Lucero followed at 145 pounds with an 8-1 win over Frank Witt to sew up the team victory. But that didn’t mean that Ellis’ meet-closing match was any less important.

It definitely wasn’t for Ellis, who was making his varsity debut. The Berthoud grappler, who was taking the place of injured Trent McConkey at 152 pounds, scored a hard-fought 9-8 decision over John MacQueen.

“It feels pretty good, but I’ve got a lot of work to do,” Ellis said after his first varsity match.

Berthoud opened the meet with a forfeit victory at 160 pounds for Nick Henderson, but Windsor scored three straight wins to go ahead 16-6 before heavyweight Jared Wikre pinned Jack Kuck in 1:47 to get the Spartans back in the win column.

After the Wizards won two of the next three matches, all by pinfall, to go ahead 28-18, Berthoud won the meet’s final six matches to improve to 3-0 in dual matches. Other winners for Berthoud included Robbie Workman (112), Graeden Sadlo (125), Alex Sadlo (130) and Curtis Martinez (130).
