State Basketball Tournament continues without Berthoud

Girls Basketball

The basketball season is over for Berthoud. We can certainly be proud of the teams. They played hard and provided exciting entertainment for the fans and both ranked high enough to be in the CHSAA State Tournament.

There have been few surprises in the results. The Lady Spartans played a powerful Pueblo East team last night. Pueblo East was seeded number 3 and showed why they earned that ranking by defeating Berthoud 50-37.

There were, however, two upsets in the Tanya Haave Region. Fifth seeded Wheat Ridge knocked off #4 Steamboat Springs, but the biggest upset followed the Berthoud/Pueblo East game when #10 Castle View triumphed over the #2 seed, Valor Christian by a score of 60-56. The Sabercats will face Pueblo East this evening.

The top seeded teams in the other two regions advanced as expected. Number 3 Roosevelt will be playing second seed Mullen in the Brenda House Region and #4 Longmont will be playing Centaurus, the #1 seed in he Lou Piel Region.

Boys Basketball

In the 4A Boys brackets, the Pueblo County team that eliminated Berthoud was demolished by #1 seed, Sierra, 66-31. There were no surprises in the Bill Weimer Region as all the top seeds won their games by a comfortable margin.

There were some upsets in second round. Sixth seed Pueblo South upset #3 Rock Canyon 71-63 to advance to the Sweet 16 in the Jim Baggot Region where Sterling holds he #1 spot.

Each of the other regions had one upset. In the Ron Shavlik Region, where Longmont has the first seed, #5 Montrose defeated #4 Prairie View. The Windsor Wizards are making a run for it in the Guy Gibbs Region. The Wizards started as the #7 seed and defeated #2 D’Evelyn in last night’s game. Tonight they will face the Broomfield Eagles. Windsor lost to Broomfield 61-67 on Jan. 16 and it will be interesting to see how the rematch goes.

The eight teams remaining after tonight’s contests will play at the Colorado School of Mines’ Lockridge Arena on Friday, March 5.
