Spartan track teams at the City to City Meet

By Denise Schump The Berthoud High school track team competed in the City to City Meet at Northridge High school in Greeley on Saturday. Several area schools came out for the meet including Loveland, Thompson Valley, Mountain View, Northridge, University and Greeley Central. The Spartan girls took fourth in the meet with the help of Courtney Mills who took first in the triple jump (35-2) and second in the long jump. Berthoud High School Senior Joel Maly has distinguished himself in several sports. Most recently, his accomplishments in the just completed basketball season show he is one of the top players in the league. He was third in total points scored, fourth in points per game and #1 in 2-point field goals. Additionally, his 64% shooting average was tops among the top twenty scorers in the league. Six Berthoud wrestlers were recognized at the 2010 award banquet concluding this year's Spartan Wrestling season. Robby Workman, Alex Sadlo, Casey Couch, J.T. Pickert and Billy Schump were given all conference top honors and Marcus Lucerco was awarded honorable mention. Scott Pickert, head coach for the Spartan team, presented the awards and gave credit for all the wrestlers who participated in this year’s successful season. CHSAA 4A State Basketball Tournament Brackets

The Berthoud Spartans (seeded #8) host  #9 Pueblo County on Tuesday, Feb. 23 at 7 p.m. The winner of that game faces the Sierra Stallions in Colorado Springs on Friday, Feb 26. The Stallions own a 21-2 record and are the #1 seed in the bracket. The #6 Lady Spartans will host  #11 Prairie View on Tuesday at 5:30 p.m. The winner of that game will play the Pueblo East Eagles in Conifer. Pickert it’s a building block for next season. The four Berthoud underclassmen placed in the top six of their respective weight classes -- Sadlo and Couch finished fifth while Workman and Pickert took sixth  -- Saturday in the 4A state wrestling championships at the Pepsi Center. Earlier Friday, Alex Sadlo, nearly pinned in the first period, overcame a five-point deficit to pin Fort Lupton’s Matt Ornelas to advance to the semifinals of the 4A state wrestling championships at the Pepsi Center. By Michael Hicks DENVER -- Alex Sadlo, nearly pinned in the first period, overcame an early 5-0 deficit to pin Fort Lupton’s Matt Omelas in the second period of Friday’s 4A state wrestling quarterfinals at the Pepsi Center to advance to tonight’s state semifinals at 135 pounds. The Spartan boys opened the first quarter with 30 points and Greeley West never recovered. Led by Shane Hart’s 36 points and Joel Maly’s 21 points and  9 rebounds (team total 30) the Berthoud Spartans (12-11-0) beat the  Greely West Spartans (14-9-0)  by the score of 81-64.
