Berthoud Wrestling Performs Brilliantly at State Tournament By Dan Karpiel Sports Writer The Berthoud High wrestling team capped off the 2010/11 season on Saturday evening at Pepsi Center with two state champions and five wrestlers finishing in the top four in class 3A. Seniors Alex Sadlo (140lbs) and JT Pickert (215lbs) won the state title in their weight classes. Six Berthoud wrestlers were recognized at the 2010 award banquet concluding this year's Spartan Wrestling season. Robby Workman, Alex Sadlo, Casey Couch, J.T. Pickert and Billy Schump were given all conference top honors and Marcus Lucerco was awarded honorable mention. Scott Pickert, head coach for the Spartan team, presented the awards and gave credit for all the wrestlers who participated in this year’s successful season. Pickert it’s a building block for next season. The four Berthoud underclassmen placed in the top six of their respective weight classes -- Sadlo and Couch finished fifth while Workman and Pickert took sixth  -- Saturday in the 4A state wrestling championships at the Pepsi Center. Earlier Friday, Alex Sadlo, nearly pinned in the first period, overcame a five-point deficit to pin Fort Lupton’s Matt Ornelas to advance to the semifinals of the 4A state wrestling championships at the Pepsi Center. By Denise Schump The Berthoud Wrestling team took third place in the 4A region 1, 17 team, regional tournament held on Friday and Saturday at Greeley Central High School. Windsor chalked up the most team points (222.5), with Greeley West (185) coming in second, and Berthoud close behind with 172. Spartan wrestlers get high marks at JFK Tournament

By Denise Schump The Berthoud Spartans took second place in the 25th annual JFK wrestling tournament in Denver on Saturday. Fifteen 4A and 5A teams took part in the competition with Berthoud coming out just 10 points behind their league rival, the Frederick Warriors. Eight Berthoud grapplers placed in the meet with three Spartans, Robbie Workman (130), Corey Ellis (160), and Casey Couch (189), taking home championship medals.
