Thompson School Board: cell phones and swimming pools
The Thompson Board of Education began the meeting listening to a presentation by the members of the Coyote Ridge Elementary School Lego robotics team. These elementary students lost one of there fellow students in 2008 when a driver talking on her cell phone struck and killed Erica Forney as she was riding her bicycle home from school. DOT prohibits texting by commercial truck and bus
In a press conference on Tuesday morning, Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood announced a ban on texting while driving, using any handheld cell phone or other device that takes a driver's attention off the road. Using existing authority of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), LaHood said the guidance would take place immediately and would apply to interstate truck drivers and to bus and van drivers who carry more than eight passengers.
