Berthoud man shot and killed by SWAT unit

Berthoud man was shot and killed by a SWAT unit after deputies say he opened fire on them Monday night. It's a policeman's worst nightmare, being called to a scene of domestic violence and finding someone with a weapon. Monday night around 9 p.m. Berthoud police responded to a call at 730 Bruce Drive. This week a woman was sitting on a bus stop bench in downtown Loveland when a very intoxicated man approached and verbally attacked her with vile, ignorant language. The woman ran into the Alternatives to Violence office on Fourth Street with the man in pursuit, where he threatened and verbally attacked her and the staff. Police stopped a driver at 1:44 a.m. shortly after he left the ramp from First Street to Highway 287.
