Spartans fall to Platte Valley 67-54 By Dan Karpiel Sports Writer A 24-point fourth period was not enough for the Berthoud Spartan boys basketball team on Friday night in the Berthoud High gym. The Spartans fell to the Platte Valley Broncos 67-54. The loss drops the Spartans season record to 5-8 overall and 3-3 in the 3A Patriot League. Tuesday night it was a 46-27 loss to Mountain View and on Thursday night the girls fell to Thompson Valley 54-28. Lady Spartans eke out win over Sterling Tigers

After trailing for much of the game, the Berthoud girls pulled out a win this evening by besting the Sterling Tigers 38 -35. The Tigers controlled the tip and scored quickly. Amy Loberg came right back and tied the score. The next four minutes was all Sterling as they ran their score to 9 while Berthoud was unable to find the hoop. The first half was a defensive battle and low scoring game. Neither team seemed to be able to work the ball into scoring position and the few shots that were attempted missed their mark. The first score did not come until 4:47 had elapsed in the first quarter when Fossil Ridge sank a 3-point goal. Berthoud’s first score came with 2:57 remaining on a free throw by Kacey Fagler. The game got off to a slow start as both teams had possession and failed to make a hoop. Wikre got to an open, missed the layup but followed shortly with a 3-pointer to put the Spartans up 3-0, Skyline came right back with two points. Ekart put Spartans at five with a steal and solo basket. The Falcons came back to take a 5-6 half way through the quarter. Berthoud had several opportunities but was unable to hit the basket. Playoff game Thursday at Berthoud High School The Spartans started off the evening with a strong performance. Northridge controlled the tip-off but was unable to score. Berthoud also had trouble finding the basket for the first two minutes but led 7 – 0 with four minutes remaining in the first quarter. This note form Athletic Director, Mark Avery "As it looks right now, I believe that both the BHS boys and girls basketball teams will be hosting a game on Thursday, February 11th in the first round of the Northern Conference Basketball Tournament.  It is conceivable that we will also play one or more games on Saturday as well, but I have not run all of the scenarios yet.  Game times will be 5:30pm for girls and 7:00pm for boys.
