I was privileged to know Gwen Hawley in her capacity as a trustee for the Berthoud Public Library, and came to count her among my friends. Gwen was a library trustee from January 2000 - December 2007. These were years of great change and challenge for the library and Gwen's calm and intellect were greatly valued by her fellow trustees. The Berthoud Community Library will be hosting its second "Paws to Read" this Monday February 27 from 6:30 pm - 7:30 pm. This program is sponsored by Paws for Responsibility, a Colorado non-profit organization. Screened, trained and registered therapy dogs and their volunteer handlers offer opportunities for children grades 1-5 to improve reading skills. Despite the chill that closed the Berthoud Community Library Monday December 19, participants enjoyed the Polar Express party that featured a reading of the Caldecott award winning book by Chris Van Allsburg. Santa made a special appearance and brought a unique kind of cheer to the event with a game of "Santa says".
