The Turner Middle School Odyssey of the Mind team missed the Long’s Peak Turnament at Berthoud High School, but managed to qualify for the state level by attending another district’s competition. The team of Nicole Silvers, Charles Walkes, Olivia Conde and Olivia Eppler is coached by Barry Eppler. They chose to do he Nature Trail’r long term problem. This NASA sponsored problem requires a human powered vehicle and a camper along with a trail to traverse. The problem has several characters and most teams have seven or eight team members. It would have been interesting to see how this team managed with only four players. Congratulations to the Turner Middle School Odyssey team.

It was a good day for the Division III Odyssey of the Mind teams as the weekend Long’s Peak Tournament. Competing on the home court at Berthoud High School, both teams took first place in their combined long term and spontaneous problem and earned a berth at the state level competition.

Discovered Treasure

The team coached by Scott and Jennifer Stewart took the Discovered Treasure problem as their performance. The team included three Turner Middle School students, Melody Blackis, Analyse DeSousa and Emmie Wellems, are all 8th graders. Completing the team are high school sophomores, Tess Sewart, Eva Henning and TJ Pippin-Mandley and junior Brendon Stewart.

Their problem was to recover an archeological treasure from the past, then travel to the future, and recover an archeological treasure from the 1900′s.

Their theme was a game show called “Who wants to be a Treasurer Hunter,” with Melody Blackis as the show moderator. The two contestants, played by Brendon Stewart and Emmie Wellems, choose treasure boxes that gave them their assignments. Emmie was to travel to the past and recover a treasure in Pompeii in the 1700′s. She discovered a partially burned basket under a staircase. The basket had survived the volcano’s eruption. She also met Joaquin Alcubeirre, played by Eva Henning, an Italian Archeologist who was digging at the site.

Brendon traveled to the future and discovered the Voyager and the golden record recorded by Jimmy Carter in 1976. He also discovered two aliens, Analyse DeSousan and Tess Steware, who played the record for him.

Both Brendon and Emmie traveled thru time in the space portal behind them in the scene. Both accidentally brought back visitors with them when they returned to present day, the two aliens and Joaquin Alcubeirre.

TJ Pippin-Mandley was the cinematographer who documented the game show.

Food Court

The other Division one team consists of four sophomores, Stefanie Messick, Kaitlyn Baker, Emilie Henning and Aja Mattisse-Lorenzon. The Coach is David Baker

This team chose the long-term problem “Food Court.” They had to create and present a humorous performance where a food item is accused of being unhealthy and must defend itself among its food peers. All characters are food items and will include “the accused,” “the accuser,” a jury that is not portrayed by team members, and additional team-created characters.

The team created their solution to demonstrate that things are not always what they seem, even with food. The team knew that gluten intolerance is a problem for many people yet not obvious in foods. To highlight this idea they chose to make the accused a crouton. To emphasize gluten intolerance, the end of the trial results in lethal rejection from the body for the gluten carrier. This is shown by the pulling of the uvula. The team then sings and plays the saxophone to parody of the song “Cruella DeVil.” Their creation is “Arugula Kale.”

Coach David Baker had this to say about the team, “The team was amazing in their ability to create humor by highlighting serious topics such as food allergies, the legal system and consumerism. They worked tirelessly as a team and constantly challenged themselves to refine their ideas. They were a joy to coach. We are looking forward to the challenge of state competition.”

Both elementary schools in Berthoud had teams performing in the Division I category in the Odyssey of the Mind Long’s Peak Tournament this weekend.

Berthoud Elementary School

The team from Berthoud Elementary, chose the Nature Trail’R, a NASA sponsored problem. The “Trail”R” refers to a trail and a trailer that are included in the problem. The team had to design, build and drive a human-powered vehicle and camper that would go on a camping trip. When the vehicle arrived at the campground, the camper had to be disconnected and the vehicle travel on a team-created Nature Trail. On the Nature Trail, the vehicle had to overcome an obstacle, clean up the environment, encounter wildlife, and undergo a repair. The performance will include a character that is in or near the camper that explains the experience as part of its role.

The team members chose the Amazon Rain Forest as their camping local. The characters in the performance were:

Left to right

Stuart Reckase, 3rd grade, as Tarzan

Joseph DuToit, 3rd grade, as the Monkey

Ben Hall, 4th grade, as Mr. Fixit

Sayber Spence, 5th grade as Mr. Scaredley

Jessa Megenhardt, 5th grade, as the Tour Guide

Will Fetzer, 4th grade, as the Fact Monster

Haley Fischer, 4th grade, as the Rain Forest Princess

Coach Gregory Fetzer had this to say about the team.

The team spent the last three months creating and refining their Odyssey of The Mind Nature Trail’s problem solution. Initially, they studied the problem description and developed an understanding of the requirements. As a team, they developed a creative scenario that was designed to entertain the audience while meeting the demands of the problem definition. The team designed and developed the Nature Trail’s raft and camper using a variety of purchased and donated materials. In the latter stages, the team produced props and costumes. The final effort involved writing and refining the script. Getting the skit down to the 8-minute limit was a real challenge.

In addition to developing a great performance, the team practiced a variety of spontaneous exercises, the second important aspect of the Odyssey of the Mind competition. Spontaneous thinking, brainstorming, and team discussion were used throughout to explore ideas and solutions.

As a coach, I found the experience to be tremendously rewarding. After each team meeting I was always very impressed with the creativity and enthusiasm of our youngsters. I am sure the kids learned a great deal from the experience and I know they put their hearts into developing and performing the play.

The kids did an awesome job and really had a lot of fun.

This team chose the Discovered Treasure problem. They had to create and present an original performance that included the portrayal of the discovery of two archaeological treasures. One portrayal was a team-created version of the discovery of an actual historical treasure. The other was be the team’s depiction of a modern sculpture or structure that exists today but is discovered in the future. The performance had to include an artistic representation of the two discovered treasures and characters that are part of the discovery teams.

Berthoud Elementary School fielded two teams in Saturdays Odyssey of the Mind Long’s Peak Tournament at Berthoud High School.

Odyssey is an international educational program that provides creative problem solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. The kindergarten through second grade students participates in the non-competitive Primary category.

All primary teams use the same problem to create their skits and all students receive a medal for participation. The presentations are graded by Odyssey judges, but scores are not announced. Instead, the score sheets are given to the coach for self evaluation.

The Primary problem for this year was “Surprise Party.” In Surprise Party, the team was to create and present a humorous performance that includes a Surprise Party for a team-created character. The theme of the party is a surprise because it is being given for something that is not normally celebrated. Partygoers will give three gifts that help symbolize the theme of the party. The performance will also include an original party “noisemaker” that makes an unusual sound instead of a loud sound. The cost must not exceed $125.

Part of the Odyssey experience is the spontaneous problem. In addition to the long-term problem described above, the team must try to find a creative solution to a new problem presented to them.

Berthoud Elementary Primary team members are Abby Bunch, Dylan Carter, Kaitlynn Hanes, Amber Holt, Jeromiah Lewis and Hannah Roberts. None of this would be possible without coaches, and working with these children is Shann Holt.

The Berthoud El team set their surprise party in Egypt, complete with a pyramid. The cast had four princesses, a guard and a merman.

As often happens, problems arise during the presentation. The judges look at how the kids deal with these unexpected situations and it enters into the grading. The Berthoud Elementary team had constructed a popcorn noise maker and when they tried to make it work, nothing happened. There solution was throw the popcorn by hand. They handled the situation with aplomb and continued with their skit as though nothing happened, just like real troopers.

After the medal presentation, Coach Holt looked at the scores and said, “We did really well. The kids had a great time and enjoyed working together as a team.” This was a first time experience for most of the kids, only Amber Holt had participated before. If they stay together, this team will move to Division I as third-graders next year.
