  Frank Samuel Macdonald of Loveland, Colo. died Dec 5, 2012 at Pathways Hospice Care Center. He was born on Dec 24, 1924 in Valverde, a truck farming area west of the South Platte River in Denver, to Frank P. and Lois E. (Merman) Macdonald. Sam attended McKinley Grade School and Grant Jr. High and graduated from South High School in 1942. He was a member of the South Platte Park Pirates softball team.     Sam Macdonald of Berthoud passed away at Pathway Hospice on December 5, 2012 at the age of 87. A memorial service will be held on December 13 at 2 p.m. at the Berthoud United Methodist Church. By Laurie Hindman Berthoud Recorder   It was over 60 years ago when 17 year old Frank Macdonald (always known by his middle name, Sam) voluntarily inducted into the Army’s infantry. A short time later he and 186 men of the 4th Division, Company I, were marching through Europe, digging foxholes and trenches, engaging in combat, fighting and dying. Only 13 returned.
