Boys Golf Team Fails to Qualify for State By Dan Karpiel Sports Writer The 3A Northern division Regional Golf Tournament began on a cool, windy Thursday morning at the Estes Park Golf Course. A small herd of Elk was kind enough to wait for the tournament to conclude before making their way onto the fifth fairway to munch on some foliage.   Resiliency key as Spartans win in 5 Sets By Dan Karpiel Sports Writer Resiliency was the key for the girls’ volleyball team Thursday night in the Berthoud High gymnasium. After rolling over Brush in the first two sets, 26-24 and 25-10, it took the ladies another three sets to finish off the Beat Diggers. Berthoud drops to 0-2 after 49-28 loss By Dan Karpiel Sports Writer Crisp and clear with a very slight breeze out of the north; it was one of those picture-perfect evenings for football on the high plains. Unfortunately for the Berthoud Spartans football team, the weather was the only pleasant thing about Friday evening. Air Academy lost to Berthoud and to Mountain View High School Berthoud (4-2) scored 10 runs on 10 hits to win 10 -2 over Air Academy. Academy scored first and held the lead after one inning, Berthoud took the lead in inning 2 and Academy tied the game 2 -2 after three innings. Berthoud put the game out of reach with three runs in the fourth and five runs in the 5th inning. The game went 6 innings with Morgan Thonhoff giving up 2 runs on 6 hits, 2 walks and 4 strikeouts. Spartan soccer shuts out Holy Family

The Berthoud High School soccer team continues to roll with its high scoring  and solid defense, winning over Holy Family High School 5 - 0. The Spartans have won all three games played against non-conference opponents with 20 goals scored and only 4 goals against. The team shows great balance as indicated by goals by Jano Beltran, Tavo Beltran, Martinius Karlsen and two by Axel Ayala while Goalie Alex Hughes made seven saves at the Berthoud goal. Windsor took the early lead with two runs in the first inning, but Berthoud came back with six runs in the second inning and that would have been enough as the Spartans shut the Wizards down for the last 5 innings. Coach Jon Barron's squad brought home another decisive victory as they defeated Roosevelt 7-4. Berthoud led 3-2 at the half on goals by Ayala, Beltran and Berra. Berthoud added four more goals in the second period with two scores by Karlsen with Beltran and Ayala each scoring. Roosevelt is now 1-1 while Berthoud is 2-0. Berthoud 11 and under baseball takes silver in league tournament

The Berthoud 11 and under baseball team finished their regular season strong by beating the Lafayette Warriors (12-9) on the Warriors home turf. The Lafayette team had only lost three games all season. Coach Dave Overholt said, “We carried that momentum into the year end league tournament going 1 and 1 the first day.  That win against the Sliders required scoring 6 runs in the bottom of the 6th inning to win 15-14.
