Dennis Rastatter, Thompson School District director of Student Support Services, has been selected to become the new director of Special Education for the District. He will replace Karen Pielin, who is retiring at the end of the 2009-2010 school year. Rastatter has served as the director of Student Support Services for the district since 2005 and was the assistant director of Special Education from 2003 to 2005. He began his career as a special education teacher in Pennsylvania and was a special education teacher at Greeley West High School before joining the Thompson School District. Rastatter received his Bachelor of Science in Special Education from Pennsylvania State University and his Master of Arts in Special Education and special education administrative licensure from the University of Northern Colorado.
Community input for the position was sought through a public meeting with the three finalists for the position. The 28 member selection committee for the position included parents, experts in the field of Special Education, district teachers and administrators.
