Tribute to Gwen Hawley

[1]

I was privileged to know Gwen Hawley in her capacity as a trustee for the Berthoud Public Library, and came to count her among my friends. Gwen was a library trustee from January 2000 – December 2007. These were years of great change and challenge for the library and Gwen’s calm and intellect were greatly valued by her fellow trustees.

The Hawley’s contributions to the library did not end in 2007, though. Gwen’s son John was the chairman of the election committee that ran a successful campaign to fund the newly created Berthoud Community Library District. I suspect that we have Gwen to thank for helping get John involved. Both Gwen and John worked hard, along with a wonderful group of people on the committee, to get the funding needed to create the library that Berthoud residents enjoy today.

Gwen’s commitment to libraries and librarianship were a reflection of her desire to see all people develop their particular interests and abilities. As a librarian myself, one of the highest compliments I can pay someone is to say she was an EXCELLENT librarian. This morning as I was deciding what to wear to her service I passed up the boring black. Gwen was a lady who had style and sparkle, from her eyes, to her smile, to her clothes. So for you, Gwen, I chose an animal print blouse with sequins. I only knew you for a few years, but I truly enjoyed knowing you.
