The Larimer County Coroner has identified the man who died during the officer-involved shooting earlier this week as Louis James Skelly, DOB: 06/27/52, of Livermore, Colorado.
On Monday, June 3rd at approximately 1:09 p.m., the Larimer County Sheriff’s Office was called to the area of County Road 82E and Cherokee Trail Road on the report of shots being fired and yelling coming from a neighboring property. After responding to the area and talking with the reporting party, the deputy contacted the resident of the adjoining property, Mr. Skelly, for a welfare check. Mr. Skelly objected to being contacted by the deputy and the deputy determined no further action was needed.
Mr. Skelly then began contacting 911 and complaining about a neighbor and other issues. Two deputies were dispatched to investigate.
As the deputies approached the property, they were confronted with gunfire from Mr. Skelly who was shooting a semi-automatic SKS rifle. One of the deputies returned fire with his department-issued AR15 rifle striking Mr. Skelly, which resulted in his death. The second deputy did not fire his weapon. The deputies were not physically harmed.
The two deputies involved have been placed on administrative leave, as is normal protocol for an officer- involved shooting, pending the conclusion of the criminal investigation and an internal review. The District Attorney’s office will also conduct a use of force review. The deputies’ names will not be released while the investigations are underway.
Cherokee Trail Road goes south off of County Road 82E between Boxer Ranch Road and Cherokee Park Road.
No additional details will be provided while the investigations continue.
