It was on a cool, cloudy and at times rainy Loveland Olde Course on Wednesday afternoon where the Berthoud High girls golf team competed in their second tournament of the season. As a team, the Lady Spartans finished in sixth place in the six team tournament. Berthoud junior Brandi Peter golfed well on the day, shooting a 97 and finishing in a tie for sixth place in individual competition.

Peter’s 97 is a ten stroke improvement over her previous outing two weeks ago at the Skyline Invitational in Longmont. When asked where she was most improved relative to the Skyline Invite, Peter said, “A lot of smarter plays and my short game, chipping and putting.” Berthoud High Golf Coach Mike King echoed Peter’s comments on her round and added, “She’s taking the steps we need her to take right now…she’s making the progress I want.” Peters play remained consistent throughout the round, going out with a 48 and in with a 49.

All in all, Peter was said she was pleased with her round. She noted she has been battling a cold over the previous few days, “Being sick wasn’t very helpful, I was fatigued though most of it and was just glad to make it through.” Peter has experienced some stiffness and soreness in her back. Peter has elected to use a push cart to ferry her clubs around the course in hopes of reducing the strain on her back. Peter said she expects to have some soreness in her back “later” but that it did not bother her during Wednesday’s round.

As a team, the Lady Spartans had a mixed day. In addition to Peter improving by ten strokes over the Skyline Invite, sophomore Amber Newby’s 113 was a nine improvement. “Amber made a big improvement this week, but I want more out of her next time because she can do it!” King said. Coach King added that he was pleased with the effort of all five golfers on his team saying, “They really hung in there; after 18 holes in this kind of weather it can be a little bit difficult to stay focused but they all did that today.”

Peter’s 97 and Newby’s 113 were added to the 120 of sophomore Hannah Haggis and 128 from sophomore Kaitlyn Baker for a total a team score of 458 strokes. Alyxis Petty’s team-high 130 was dropped when summing team scores.

Broomfield High School placed first in the Mountain View League Meet with a team score of 355. Three Broomfield golfers placed in the top five in individual competition, led by the 80 strokes score turned in by first place winner Taylor Doran.

The Lady Spartans’ next competition will be on Monday April, 11 at the Centaurus League Meet played at Indian Peaks Golf Course in Lafayette.
