Crystal Fire Update

[1]

Larimer County Sheriff’s Office
Press Release

April 2, 5 p.m.

The Crystal Fire in Larimer County remains at about 20 to 25 acres with approximately 25% to 30% containment. Again this afternoon, winds remained relatively calm providing firefighters an opportunity to continue to contain the fire.

One structure, containing an ATV and a motorcycle, was destroyed earlier today. The vehicles were also destroyed. No additional structures are threatened at this time and no evacuations are planned. Crystal Mountain Road south of Buckeye Road will remain open only to residents. There have been no injuries.

Few flames were visible late this afternoon as firefighters sought to put out burning embers and hot spots in the grassy areas. Concerns of increased winds fanning the fire will keep crews on scene through the night.

Area residents were notified of the situation earlier today via the Rist Canyon Community Information system, an email-based system.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

The next update will occur tomorrow morning after crews have had a chance to assess the situation.

April 2, 1 p.m.

The Crystal Fire in the area of Buckhorn Road and Crystal Mountain Road in Larimer County is still reported at about 20-25 acres with 25% to 30% containment.  No injuries have been reported.

Firefighters have been helped by low winds so far.  Winds are estimated to be five to six miles per hour  gusting to 10 miles per hour at the site of the fire; however, reports are that winds in the Red Feather Lakes area to the north have started to pick up.

One structure, an outbuilding containing an ATV and a motorcycle, has been destroyed.  No other structures are immediately threatened at this time.

There are still no plans for evacuations and Crystal Mountain Road south of Buckhorn Road will continued to be open only to residents.

In addition to Larimer County Emergency Services, Rist Canyon Fire and the U.S. Forest Service, units from Rocky Mountain National Park, The Nature Conservancy and the Colorado State Forest Service are on scene.

April 2, 9 a.m.

Larimer County Emergency Services, Rist Canyon Fire and the U.S. Forest Services are fighting a fire in the area of Buckhorn Road (Larimer County Road 44H) and Crystal Mountain Road.  The fire was reported last night at approximately 7:06 p.m. and was initially about three to five acres in size.

The fire is now 20 to 25 acres and is approximately 25% contained.  Extreme weather conditions are expected today with low humidity and winds.   The fire is in an area with grass and heavy timber.

There are structures in the area; however, there has been no damage to those structures and no evacuations have been ordered at this time.  Area residents are being notified via the Rist Canyon Community Information system.  Deputies are posted at Buckhorn Road and Crystal Mountain Road and will be allowing residents  only into the area.  The area is extremely rugged and is accessible only by four-wheel drive vehicles.

At this point it does not appear that air support will be necessary but that could change and will be monitored closely.

The fire is primarily on private property.  The cause of the fire is unknown at this time.
