Charles L. “Chuck” Pennell
(February 15, 1945 – May 4, 2010)

Charles “Chuck” L. Pennell of Loveland died peacefully at his home on May 4, 2010 surrounded by his family. Chuck was born on February 15, 1945 in Durango, Colorado as the youngest child of Lee and Bessie Pennell.

Chuck grew up on the family farm in Ignacio, Colorado. He attended Ignacio High School where he played on Colorado state finalist basketball and football teams and was active in various clubs and activities. He was voted Mr. IHS his senior year. After graduating from Ignacio High School in 1963, he attended CSU in Ft. Collins where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in History.

While attending CSU, he met his future wife, Martha Kissane. They married in Durango on Aug. 10, 1968. Chuck was a devoted family man and enjoyed raising his three children with his wife, Martha. Chuck and Martha moved to Loveland in 1968 and have been active residents over the years. Chuck was recently baptized by the Catholic Church.

Chuck spent his entire career as an educator working with local young people. He had a great passion for helping students create their best future path.

From 1968 to 1973, he taught social studies at Bill Reed Junior High where he was also a coach. He returned to CSU while working to earn a Masters Degree in Psychology.

From 1973 to 2000, he was a counselor at Berthoud High School and was a member of many counseling organizations.

In 1989, The Reporter Herald honored him in their “Making a Difference 1989”. After earning another Bachelor of Administration Degree in Finance from CSU, he started his own tax preparation business where he continued to prepare taxes though the 2009 tax season. Chuck loved preparing taxes for all of his clients and friends over the years. Chuck was a volunteer and board member for the Big Thompson Federal Credit Union over several decades.

Chuck was passionate about fishing and hunting. He enjoyed his time in “the great outdoors” with his family and friends. After he was diagnosed with malignant melanoma early in 2009, his children took him fishing on the Columbia River in order to fulfill his dream of catching “a really big fish”. He was rewarded with a two hundred fifty pound sturgeon, and he was thrilled! During his battle with cancer, Chuck and his family received an outpouring of support from family, friends, medical professionals, and the community. Chuck was grateful for and overwhelmed by the generous ways that people supported him. Chuck was recently baptized by the catholic church.

Chuck is survived by his wife Martha; his children, Anne (Carl) Chillman of Lakewood, Colorado, Mark (Ellen) Pennell of Loveland, John (Molly) Pennell of Olympia, Washington, his sister Ann (DL) McAfee of Scipio, Oklahoma., his brothers Dean Pennell of Greeley, and Tom (Linda) Pennell of Pagosa Springs, Colorado, and his beautiful and much loved grandchildren Wyatt Pennell, Hudson Pennell, and Avery Chillman.

Chuck was preceded in death by his parents.
