David E. Schump, 59, died May 2, 2010 in a plane crash near Louisville, KY that also took the life of his wife Elizabeth. They had been playing golf and fishing in Georgia, and had planned to stop in Louisville to visit friends.
David was born April 26, 1951, in Herrington, Kansas to Mike and Helen Schump. His family moved to Greeley, Colorado in 1958. He graduated from Greeley West High School in 1969. In 1973, David received his BS in Analytical Chemistry from Lake Forest College, and in 1976 he received his MBA from the University of Denver. In 1979, David married Elizabeth May.
David co-founded Baker Instrument Company on January 14, 1972. He was promoted to president on December 28, 1984. In 1985, he established a European subsidiary, Baker Instrument GmbH in Germany. Baker Instrument Company moved from Link Lane to 2310 East Prospect Road in 1984. David purchased the firm from Tom Baker on August 14, 1991. David and his family moved to Singapore in 1992, and established a sales office incorporated under the name Ameri-Coil. In 1995, Baker Instrument Company moved into a new building at 4812 McMurry Avenue. David sold Baker Instrument Company in June of 2007, to SKF USA Inc. According to employees, David ran Baker Instrument Company as a family business and was recognized as an excellent leader and manager – well loved by those who worked for him.
David worked on committees for IEEE which set standards for electrical engineering. He was also an active member of EASA � Electrical Apparatus Service Association, a member of Colorado District Exporting Council, and in 1998 he received the Governor�s Award for Exporting. David served the Disabled Veterans Command, flying disabled veterans to participate in activities not limited by their disability. He was an active member of Rotary Club of Fort Collins and Trustee of the Club�s Local Endowment fund. David also served on the board of the Colorado State University Research Foundation.
David enjoyed a great many activities, which he undertook with his family and friends including fishing, golf, scuba diving, flying, and motorized gliding among many others. David and Liz enjoyed entertaining and traveled the world prolifically, often accompanied by family and friends.
David is survived by three sons; Matthew, owner and executive chef of the Canyon Chop House in Fort Collins and wife Maggie; Joseph, veteran of two tours of duty in Iraq with the Marines and recent graduate of Lake Forest College and who is engaged to Juliana Green; and Michael, who completed his BS in Molecular and Cellular Biology at Johns Hopkins University and is currently working on his PhD in Infectious Diseases and Immunity at UC Berkeley. David is also survived by his mother Helen, four grandchildren: Taylour, Jake, Willa Skye, and Wade, and 2 brothers and their families, James Schump and wife Denise of Berthoud, and Roger Schump and Lori Rapp of Greeley. David is preceded in death by his son Richard, and his father Mike.
An interment service will be held at 2:00 pm Tuesday, May 11, at Resthaven Memorial Gardens. A Celebration of Life Service will take place at 5:00 pm Tuesday, May 11, at CSU Lory Student Center in the Main Ballroom. Elizabeth M. Schump, 64, died May 2, 2010, in a plane crash near Louisville, KY, that also took the life of her husband David. They had been playing golf and fishing in Georgia, and had planned to stop in Louisville to visit friends.
Liz was born March 14, 1946, in Elmhurst, IL, to Roland and Ann Marie (Heffernan) May, a first generation Irish-American. When Liz was 10 years old, the family moved to Glenn Ellyn, IL, where her father gave her a horse, which sparked a lifelong love of equestrian sports most recently dressage.
Liz received a degree in Fine Arts and Graphic Arts from Southern Illinois University in 1968, was married and moved to Wyoming where her first son, Richard was born. In 1973, the family moved to Denver, where her son Matthew was born. In 1977, Liz divorced and went back to work, first as a production room supervisor, then art director, and eventually account executive.
In 1979, Liz married David E. Schump and moved to Fort Collins, where sons Michael and Joseph were born. David adopted Richard and Matthew in 1982. While in Fort Collins, Liz worked as an account representative for Bob Coontz Graphic Designs and from 1993 to 1995 for Baker Instruments, where she created a Customer Seminar Program that is still in use today.
Liz was the owner and operator of Chantellen, a dressage training facility. She often traveled widely to ride and train horses most often to Germany. Last summer she rode third level dressage on her horse, Saffa. She was very excited about a young horse, Faraday, which was trained to allow her to compete at the Prix St. George level.
She was also an active member of PEO, a philanthropic organization focused on women’s education. Liz and David sponsored the Richard W. Schump Memorial Scholarship at CSU, which is given based on need to freshman entering college. Liz was an exceptional hostess and culinary enthusiast. In addition to her equestrian pursuits, she enjoyed reading (she studied philosophy at CSU), fishing, golf, and traveling the world, often accompanied by friends and family. Liz was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Fort Collins.
