Police Beat: Feb. 26, 2009

Tuesday, Feb. 17
It pays to report incidents to the police. While speaking with a Berthoud woman about a case, she mentioned that her grandson’s bicycle had been stolen a few weeks before. The officer recognized it as one in the department’s abandoned property and boy and bicycle were reunited.

A loud hissing noise coming from the area of High Country Proco at 10 a.m. was identified as a propane tank being blown out.

Police found a bicycle in the area of First St. and Indiana Ave.

Wednesday, Feb. 18
A middle school student went to the school nurse with elbow pain. He told her he had been hit by a car while riding his bicycle to school that morning. Principal Seibers requested an officer come to the school.

Thursday, Feb. 19
A Highlands Ranch driver was cited for careless driving when he pulled on to the shoulder of Highway 56 and then attempted to make a U-turn just as Berthoud driver was passing by. The collision caused the Berthoud driver to lose control, cross over the road and roll two or three times. Two of the three occupants of the car received injuries.

A Berthoud High School student reported the theft of an iPod while at school and she had suspect information.

A caller in the 300 block of E. Colorado Ave. reported a barking dog and asked that an officer contact him. The responding officer could hear several barking dogs but not at a specific location.

Friday, Feb. 20
The vehicle leaving Berthoud Park at 3 a.m. drew the attention of a police officer on patrol. After following the vehicle for a short time, the officer observed it stopping in the 400 block of Indiana Ave and saw three females running from the vehicle and attempting to jump the fence. The officer activated his emergency lights and ordered the girls to stop running and come back to the car. The girls, aged thirteen and fourteen, admitted their parents did not know they were out and about. The sixteen-year-old male driver had snuck out of his house and picked up the girls where they were having a sleep over. From there they had gone to Wal-Mart and were driving around looking for “something to do.” All four juveniles were released to their parents.
 
At the end of the day, police found that a driver had hit the stop sign at Meadowlark Dr. and Highway 56 and left without reporting the incident.

There is no suspect in the paint balling of the Berthoud Family Physician sign. There was no permanent damage to the sign.

A small photo album of a fishing trip was found in the 1100 block of Fourth Street and turned over to police.

Saturday, Feb. 21
Police responded to the Brick Oven Pizza shop to investigate a burglary. The door of the walk-in cooler had been broken off but the owners were unsure if anything had been taken.

Police were unable to locate four juveniles going up and down Welch Ave. asking for money.

Police received a call from Skyline Urgent Care reporting an assault. A female had come in with an injured hand. Apparently she found a male smoking pot in her bathroom and she hit him, apparently injuring her hand in the process.

Sunday, Feb. 22
A man came into the police department to report an assault and a missing tooth. He said he was hit by an older male the evening before. He had been somewhere in Mary’s Farm subdivision but was not sure of the address.

Monday, Feb. 23
A little Schnauzer was reported at large on Bien Ave at 7:32 a.m. Police were unable to locate the Schnauzer.

A bicycle rider reported that a lady driving a minivan pulled out onto Welch Ave. without stopping and nearly hit him. The rider called to her to stop but said she flipped him off and said “I don’t have time for you.” The 2002 Honda is registered to an address in the 600 block of Pyramid Peak St.

The new Code Enforcement Officer investigated a report of trash in the yard and driveway of a house at Fourth St. and Franklin Ave. No one was at home and the officer left his card.

Police found a man sleeping on the floor of the post office shortly after 10:30 p.m. He had no police record and was taken to a shelter in Longmont.
