Police Beat: Oct. 15, 2009

Tuesday, Oct. 6

• Police responded to suspicious activity at the First Baptist Church on Bunyan Ave. but found no criminal violation.
• Several warnings and one summons were issued after traffic stops.
• An officer responded to the report that five kids were tearing up the basketball hoop at the First United Methodist Church. The officer reported that he found no signs of vandalism.

Wednesday, Oct. 7

• A man who had rented a unit at the self storage reported to police that everything was missing, including the lock.
• All was quiet when the officer arrived in the 900 block of Fifth St. in response to a barking dog complaint.
• Police verbally warned juveniles who were skateboarding on the east side of Turner Middle School.
• A local woman reported major damage to her vehicle after hitting an open manhole the night before. The report does not give the location of the manhole.
• A man came in to the Police Department to report a barking dog. He was advised to call when the dog was barking and that an officer would then stop in the area and listen for the dog.
• A caller reported kids in an older blue Ford truck were attempting to do doughnuts in the Town Park parking lot. Police were unable to locate the truck.
• A loud party and loud music in the 700 block of Fifth St. led to a visit by a Berthoud Police officer and the music was turned off.
• The Parks and Recreation department asked for extra patrols at Town Park after a series of overnight suspicious activities.

Thursday, Oct. 8

• Juveniles with air soft guns who were causing problems at the Pizza Hut were gone when police arrived.
• Police responded to a physical disturbance in the 400 block of Mountain Ave. The male at this address resisted arrest and the female complainant was uncooperative and desired no action.

Friday, Oct. 9

• A newspaper carrier reported a mail box that appeared to have been “plowed down” by a car. The investigating officer reported that he had noticed the box down the previous night and it appeared to have fallen down.  
• A motorist reported that a white Toyota pickup had backed into her car in the parking lot in the 900 block of Mountain Ave. The Toyota left the scene and the case is being handled as a hit and run.
• Police were unable to locate a 35 to 40-year-old drunken person reported near the high school.
• Police spent two and half hours at the scene of a motor vehicle accident with injuries at the intersection of County Road 8 and Highway 287.

Saturday, Oct. 10

• A woman on Hollyberry St. reported two dogs in her backyard. A minute later the dogs’ owner called to report her dogs were lost this morning. She was able to retrieve the pets soon thereafter but received a verbal warning from the police.
• Police also responded to a non-injury motor vehicle accident on the interstate and investigated a burglar alarm at a residence. The alarm turned out to be a false alarm.

Sunday, Oct. 11

• Police were called to several motor vehicle accidents at the intersections on Highway 287.
• A local business owner in the 100 block of Bunyan Ave reported air conditioner lines broken and flooding the area. The caller could not reach anyone at the Town. The problem was actually a broken backflow prevention valve on the sprinkler system and the leak was stopped when the respondent turned the valve off.
• Police assisted a motorist stranded on the side of the road on south Highway 287.  

Monday, Oct. 12

• A basement window was broken at a residence in the 100 block of E. Iowa Ave.
• Police assisted when a citizen reported water running at a residence in the 800 block of Redwood Cir. Police found a broken sprinkler head and eight inches of water in the basement. The water department arrived on the scene soon thereafter.
