LONGMONT — A 21-year-old Berthoud Marine is recovering in a San Diego hospital after six surgeries to repair extensive damage he suffered to his left leg when he stepped on an IED in Afghanistan during a patrol on Oct. 31.

Lance Cpl. Zachary Dinsmore, a 2008 Berthoud High School graduate, is expecting a seventh and, hopefully final, surgery soon.

“He’s got a lot of pins and rods and everything in there,” said his mother, Tara Dinsmore, who remains at his bedside at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego.

She said she found out about the explosion and her son’s injury directly from him.

“We were fortunate,” she said. “He was able to call us to tell us originally.”

Zachary Dinsmore said he was the only one hurt in the explosion and that other Marines rushed to his aid.

“I was on patrol and stepped in the wrong place,” he said. “I was never in shock. I was never unconscious, just pain for a long time.” Read More [2]
