Gardening Tips: Reap the Harvest

Plant sweet corn and beans every two weeks through June to extend your harvest. Or choose early, mid-season and late varieties and plant them all at the same time.

You can keep a bouquet of fresh basil on the kitchen counter for 3 to 4 weeks. Rinse the cut stems in cool water and cut off any decayed leaves. Gently shake the water from the leaves. Stand the bouquet upright in a container like a canning jar with the leaves above the water and cover loosely with a plastic bag.

Potting soil, peat moss and manure often come in bags measured in quarts and cubic feet. Knowing that there approximately 25 quarts to a cubic foot will make it easier to compare prices.

One of the best ways to attract pollinators like birds, bats and bees of all kinds to your garden is to stop using pesticides. Acephate (Orthene), carbaryl (Sevin), malathion and synthetic pyrethroids are some of the most harmful to bees and birds.

Spring flowering shrubs such as spirea, viburnum, lilac and forsythia should be pruned as soon as they are done blooming.
