Greeley accepting applications for vacant council position

Application Process Announced for Vacant At-Large Council Seat

Attachment: Council At-Large Vacancy Application

Greeley City Councilmember Maria Secrest has resigned her at-large Council position and accepted a position with Representative Cory Gardner’s new Greeley office.

According to Colorado law, there are two options for selecting a replacement on the City Council:  1) an application, interview and appointment process or 2) a special election.  The Council has chosen to use the first option as it is much less expensive than a special election. A special election is estimated to cost $50,000.  Whoever is selected by the Council will fill Secrest’s position until her term would have expired in November of this year.  At that time the incumbent has the option of submitting their name as a candidate for the seat.

Applications:

Application/deadline: The Council appointment application is available online at  www.greeleygov.com. An application can also be picked up at the City Clerk’s Office between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.  Submission deadline is January 20 and applications must be received at the Clerk’s Office, located at 1000 10th Street, no later than 5 p.m. on January 20.

The entire process for choosing a replacement will be accomplished by the end of February.  When the schedule is finalized for applicant interviews, Council deliberations and the installation ceremony, that schedule will be announced – residents are invited to attend those meetings.  Those public meetings will also be broadcast live on the City’s cable TV channel, GTV8, available to Comcast subscribers in Greeley, Evans and LaSalle.
