Costume Change for Addressing History: The Pioneering Women of Loveland Exhibit at the Loveland Museum/Gallery
The dolls began with their Winter wardrobe on March 24 and will be changed into their Summer Wardrobe for display on May 17, 2011.
Loveland, Colo. The Loveland Museum/Gallery is displaying the exhibit Addressing History: The Pioneering Women of Loveland in Period Costume in the Green Room Gallery through September 11, 2011. The exhibit features twelve handcrafted porcelain dolls that represent the first women who came to the Big Thompson Valley. The dolls will be clothed in three different period costumes, dating from 1860 through 1915 during the run of the exhibit. The dolls began with their Winter wardrobe on March 24 and will be changed into their Summer Wardrobe for display on May 17, 2011. The final change will take place on July 19, 2011 when the dolls are displayed in their evening gown wardrobe. All of the costumes worn by the dolls are actual designs from these periods recreated as closely as possible to the original using period patterns and magazines as references.
The exhibit is on display courtesy of Loveland artist, Fran Robison. Robison has always been interested in this particular time period. She started collecting vintage lace and period fashion magazines about twenty years before dressing her first doll. Fran Robison’s detailed craftsmanship is reminiscent of past fashion dolls. Her dolls clearly show the progression of the latest styles from 1860 through 1915 in minute detail. By identifying a Loveland pioneer for each particular dress, Fran brings an additional richness to this historic costume exhibit and catalog. These special occasion costumes are not ones that each of the women personally wore but, rather, a style of clothing that would have been incorporated into their own after viewing fashion plates in publications such as Godey’s Lady’s Book and McCall’s Magazine.
The history of dressing fashion dolls began with Louis XIV’s decision to promote Paris fashions. He began sending life-sized fashion dolls, dressed in the latest styles, to European courts. Noble ladies would have their tailors imitate the doll’s clothes, footwear, hats and accessories. Because of detailed construction, dressmakers were able to remove the clothes and copy them as patterns, sizing them to individual customers. By the 19th century, fashion dolls were being sent to America. Paper patterns were developed during the Victorian era, but fashion dolls continued to be used even after World War II.
