Sports Briefs: Eagles Nab Sixth Division Banner

SOUTHAVEN, Miss. — The Colorado Eagles captured their sixth Northwest Division title despite a 4-3 shootout loss at the Mississippi RiverKings on Saturday night. Colorado was the first team in the Central Hockey League to secure a playoff spot and the second team, behind the Odessa Jackalopes, to win a division title.

The Eagles wrap up their regular season March 21. Playoff dates and opponents will be announced as soon as possible.

Against the RiverKings, Colorado took a 3-1 lead into the third period behind goals from Kevin Ulanski, Aaron Schneekloth and Ed McGrane. Mississippi rallied with a pair of third-period goals to send the game into overtime. After neither team scored in the five-minute extra session, the RiverKings pushed three of four shots past Colorado goaltender Andrew Penner in the shootout to score the victory.

Mississippi held a 9-4 edge in power plays and a 51-24 advantage in shots.

Eagles add defenseman in time for playoffs

The Colorado Eagles claimed defenseman Clay Toring off waivers from the Bossier-Shreveport Mudbugs on Tuesday.

The rookie from Frontier, Saskatchewan, Thoring had three assists, a plus-one rating and 29 penalty minutes in 22 games with Bossier-Shreveport. He scored his first professional point in a game at Loveland’s Budweiser Events Center earlier this season.

“Clay will bring a valuable commodity to our lineup as a dependable, defensive defenseman,” said Eagles head coach Kevin McClelland. “He’s a steady influence on the back end and a player of solid character as well.”

Thoring, who played three seasons in the Western Hockey League, attended Arcadia University for one year before playing four seasons at the University of Regina. He played in 157 games at Regina, recording 14 goals, 46 assists and 242 penalty minutes.

He is expected to join the team tonight at Rocky Mountain before the Eagles host the Rage on Friday and the Rapid City Rush on Saturday.
