Obituary: Dorothy Jean Sterkel

  Dorothy Jean Sterkel, 81, of Loveland died on May 20, 2012 at McKee Medical Center in Loveland. She was born on November 11, 1930 in Berthoud to John and Alice (Schriner) Schleuger. She married Samuel Edward Sterkel on September 5, 1948 in Loveland. Dorothy worked as a homemaker and  for many years as the Head Cook at Berthoud Elementary School.  She also helped her husband Sam, work the family farm. Kindergarten teacher Millie McCloy was taken by surprise Thursday morning when she was recognized with the Champions Excellence In Education Award. Champions’ area manager, Stephanie Roberts, used the occasion of the Berthoud Elementary teachers’ breakfast to make the presentation. McCloy teaches kindergarten classes at the school, but is employed by Champions®, an organization that provides extended learning experiences. That is what 9-year-old Carly Rafferty had to say about getting a ride to school in a Berthoud fire truck. Carly’s father and mother treated their three children to a dream adventure. Wayne and Tiffany Rafferty purchased this gift for their children at the Berthoud Habitat for Humanity Hoedown. Berthoud Elementary School fielded two teams in Saturdays Odyssey of the Mind Long’s Peak Tournament at Berthoud High School. Odyssey is an international educational program that provides creative problem solving opportunities for students from kindergarten through college. The kindergarten through second grade students participates in the non-competitive Primary category.
