Berthoud Police Blotter: March 2015

A vehicle traveling east bound crashed into a tree. A 39-year-old driver was found to be DUI.

Monday, February 29

Motor Vehicle Theft: 1500 block of Chokeberry Street, a resident was notified by Longmont Police Department that his Toyota Tundra was found damaged and abandoned on the side of the road.

Vehicle Trespass: 1500 block of Chokeberry Street, a resident reported her two unlocked vehicles were entered and rummaged through nothing was missing.

Criminal Mischief: 1300 4th Street, a resident reported someone slashed the two front tires on his vehicle.

Suspicious Circumstances: 1000 block of 2nd Street, an employee reported a suspicious male, driving a white mid-2000’s Chevy Impala approached one of the customers and asked her to purchase marijuana for him. The customer declined.

Family Problems: 300 Hubbell Street, a 57-year-old man and a 24-year-old man were in a disturbance. One of the men when using alcohol gets violent when he drinks. Simple fix here.

Tuesday, March 1

Juvenile Problems: 200 block of Welch Avenue, staff members called about five juveniles being disruptive in the library. The deputy contacted the juvenile boys who were running between the skate park and the library.

Violation of a Restraining Order: 900 block of Wilshire Drive, a 36-year-old man was arrested for violating a protection order by contacting the person he is restrained from.

Wednesday, March 2

Warrant Arrest: 900 block of Massachusetts Avenue, a 20-year-old man was contacted walking near Turner Middle School. The man had a misdemeanor warrant and was booked at the jail.

DUI / Driving Under Revocation / Uninsured Vehicle / Expired Plates: Hwy 56 / CR13, a 42-year-old woman was being contacted on a traffic stop for expired tags. The driver license was also cancelled/denied and she had no vehicle insurance. The driver did not complete roadside maneuvers in a manner consistent with that of a sober person and was arrested for DUI.

Thursday, March 3

Family Problems: 900 block of Wilshire Drive, a 36-year-old called wanting to report that his baby’s mother violated a protection order by giving him an update about his child and asking what he wanted to do with his dog. This is a case of “since she had me arrested I’m going to get her arrested. It did not work.

Theft: 200 block of 1st Street, a resident called to report that her trailer had been stolen along with her belongings.

Family Problems: 800 block of Spartan, a 32-year-old woman and a 36-year-old man had a custody dispute over their children,

Friday, March 4

Vehicle Trespass: 20700 SE Frontage Road, Berthoud Park and Ride, a woman reported that someone had broken into her car.

Vehicle Crash: 2900 block of Cooperland Blvd, a driver got too close to a parked truck and hit the truck’s mirror.

Saturday, March 5

Criminal Tampering: 1000 block of Arapahoe Avenue, a resident’s home was egged. His daughter believes she knows who did it.

Sunday, March 6

Disturbance: 800 block of Spartan, a parent walked into the basketball tournament without paying. She was contacted by staff and she came out to pay but an argument ensued.

Animal Problem: 4th Street and Franklin Avenue, while walking their dog another dog got out of its yard and attacked theirs. The attacked dog did not have any visible injuries. Owner of the suspect dog said that he is going to do whatever is necessary to make sure that it did not happen again.

Juvenile Problem: Berthoud Park, 3 boys were reported as smoking pipes and cigarettes.

Suicidal Threats: 20700 SE Frontage Road: While driving on I-25, a 44-year-old man made suicidal statements to his son. The man then pulled over at the Berthoud Park and Ride and then walked off into a field. An area search was conducted and the man was briefly contacted, but swam across the river after failing to comply with orders. Pretty sure he was not participating in the polar plunge when he decided to go swimming.

Monday, March 7

Animal Problem: 800 block of Holmes Place, a 22-year-old man was cited for animal ordinance violations after his dog escaped from the backyard and attacked a neighbor and her dog. Neighbor fell during the attack and sustained minor scratches. The dog only lost some fur and sustained no injuries. I think the fight was over who’s paw was better.

Driving with a Revoked License: Hwy 287 & mile marker 328, a 38-year-old Loveland man was stopped for a traffic violation and was found to have a revoked license.

Tuesday, March 8

Harassment: 300 block of E Colorado Avenue, a resident called to report that a scammer is using her phone number as theirs.

Tampering: 300 block of Massachusetts Avenue, a resident reported that someone had broken their door. During the investigation it was determined that it was probably 14 and 12-year-old boys that are known to the resident.

Criminal Mischief / Criminal Tampering / Trespass / Obstructing a Law Enforcement Officer / Arrest Warrant: 1000 block of 3rd Street, a 34-year-old Loveland man broke a window at this residence while looking for someone who did not live at this residence. He fled on foot but the deputy located him hiding in bushes at a nearby residence. The man was uncooperative with commands and postured aggressively. A taser was effectively deployed and the man was taken into custody without further incident. The man also had two active warrants for Failure to Comply with Probation.

Theft / Vehicle Trespass: 900 block of Wilshire Drive, a resident left his vehicle at this residence. When he returned to pick up the vehicle several tools and a Kirby vacuum had been taken from the vehicle.

Violation of a Restraining Order / Violation of Bail Bond Conditions: 901 Wilshire Drive, a 36-year-old man went to this address to pick up his vehicle without a civil standby which is a violation of his recent restraining order and bond conditions.

Wednesday, March 9

Family Problems: 901 Wilshire Drive, a man texted a resident accusing her of stealing items from his vehicle.

Assist Other: 500 block of Redwood Circle, a 59-year-old man was served with a trespass notice for all Berthoud Schools because of his behavior.

Money Laundering / ID Theft / Forgery / Evidence Tampering / Unauthorized use of a Financial Transaction Device / Theft: 400 block of N. Meadowlark Drive, a resident used his credit card at a business, and a short time later, several fraudulent purchases were made in Fort Collins using that credit card information. A 36-year-old Florida man returned to the Target store where the credit card was used earlier, and was in possession of 8 more fraudulent credit cards and a fake Florida driver’s license. He made another purchase with a fraudulent credit card but was stopped and held by Target loss prevention. The man hid the wallet containing the cards and driver’s license in his clothing to prevent discovery.

Thursday, March 10

Motorist Assist: CR 17 & Hwy 287, A vehicle was broken down on the side of the road when a Berthoud Deputy stopped to assist, The man was very late for work so he was given a ride to his work site by the deputy.

Motorist Assist: 200 block of 2nd Street, a frantic mother called to report her vehicle was locked, running and her young child was inside. Responding deputy got the vehicle open and the child was safe and unharmed.

Friday, March 11

Possession of a Hand Grenade: 500 block of Bunyan Avenue, a student brought a deactivated WWII style hand grenade to school and showed a couple buddies during lunch. It was a gift from Santa but Santa did not know he had this item until the school called him.

Assault / Harassment / Criminal Mischief / Domestic Violence: 300 block of Welch Avenue, a 35-year-old woman and a 30-year-old man were arrested and booked for various domestic violence related charges after a mutual fight.

Saturday, March 12

Warrant Arrest: Berthoud Town Hall, an 18-year-old woman was contacted reference an outstanding warrant and she was arrested.

Disturbance: 300 block of Mountain Avenue: The owner of a business called to report that a 33-year-old employee was causing a disturbance inside of the business. The employee was clearly impaired by alcohol and was very uncooperative.

Sunday, March 13

Vehicle Crash / Unsafe Backing / Driving with a Revoked license / Warrant Arrest: 900 block of Mountain Avenue, a 25-year-old man backed into another vehicle. The man was found to have a warrant and his license was revoked.

Armed Robbery: 400 block of Meadowlark Drive, a business was the victim of an armed robbery. The suspect brandished a gun and ordered the clerk to get the cash from the register. The suspect then fled on foot. A perimeter was set up and a K-9 search of the area was conducted. A Longmont Police Detective also responded and believes that the robbery may be related to similar incidents that have occurred in Longmont.

Monday, March 14

Vehicle Trespass: 600 block of Capitol Avenue, a resident reported that someone entered her car and took $5.

Robbery Follow-up: 1000 block of 1st Street, an employee reported that a suspicious male fitting the description of the robbery suspect in this case had come into the store about 40 minutes before the robbery at Hometown Liquor. Video was collected and will be reviewed by investigations.

Tuesday, March 15

Speed Contest / Weaving / DUI: Berthoud Peak Drive and CR 19, a deputy heard an engine rapidly accelerating north of his location on County Road 19. The deputy observed a white 1968 Ford traveling at a high rate of speed southbound on County Road 19. After the vehicle passed the deputy he attempted to catch up to it. The Ford slowed and made a right turn from County Road 19 onto County Road 8. The Ford was clocked between 90 and 100 miles an hour. While the vehicle was going westbound, the deputy also observed that it was having difficulty maintaining a lane as it crossed over both the center line and the fog line on multiple occasions. While following the Ford for over a mile with lights and siren the Ford finally stopped. Driver stated he just got his Ford running and wanted to test drive it and the driver is suspected to have been drinking.

Wednesday, March 16

Vehicle Trespass: 900 block of Spartan Avenue (Bein Park), a resident reported that someone entered her vehicle and stole her cell phone and medication.

Theft: 100 block of 2nd Street, a 13-year-old boy stole $300 from his mom’s bedroom and bought Amazon gift cards. “At Amazon Anything’s Possible” except when stealing mom’s money.

Suspicious Circumstances: 2000 block of Burbank Street, a resident reported a green Nissan Sedan as a suspicious vehicle when the vehicle followed them from their home to the Berthoud Ball Park and back home. When the female driver was confronted, she just stared and said nothing. Investigation concluded that this 22-year-old woman has possible onset of schizophrenia and has been driving around Northern Colorado since Tuesday afternoon when she got out of school in Denver. The woman was located sitting in her car in the middle of the roadway, thinking she was in Denver and waiting for friends. Relieved parents are driving up to get the woman and the vehicle.

Thursday, March 17

4 different animal calls

DUI / Warrant Arrest: Mountain Avenue and Gateway Blvd, a 32-year-old woman was contacted for speeding and was subsequently arrested for DUI. A 27-year-old male passenger in the vehicle was arrested for an active warrant.

Suspicious Circumstances: 1100 block of 4th Street, a resident reported that he found his dog injured in his front yard. It is unknown how the dog was hurt, but he reportedly saw a group of four high school aged males walking toward Mountain Ave. after he found his dog crying in the yard. They were wearing hoodies with hoods up, and he was unable to provide a description.

Friday, March 18

Driving Under Restraint / Speeding: 2300 Block S. Lincoln, a 25-year-old man slid off the roadway and became stuck. His license was found to be cancelled for an unpaid ticket.

Follow-up: The deputy collected Veterinarian reports and obtained some video on the Animal abuse call from last night.

Driving Under Restraint / Turn Signal Violation: Hwy 287 and CR 17, a 30-year-old woman was stopped for a turn signal violation and found to have a revoked license.

Saturday, March 19

Careless Driving/No Insurance: Mountain Avenue and 1st Street, a driver heading home from work fell asleep while driving and struck a light pole at the round-a-bout.

Suspicious Circumstances: 1600 block of Alpine Avenue, a resident reported a male drove into his garage and shut the garage door. The resident confronted the man inside the garage. The male stated he thought he was at a friend’s house. The resident opened the garage door and the man drove away.

Family Problems: 800 block of Franklin Avenue, the Facility Director reported 64-year-old man that was slapped by his 83-year-old mother. The mom stated she has been staying with her son for almost two weeks because staff is unable to care and control him. The man is a veteran who has been discharged from several homes due to his behavior and mental issues. The mom admitted to slapping him after he threw his breakfast tray at her.

Sunday, March 20

Driving Under Revocation / Warrant / Possession of Drug Paraphernalia: 400 block of Meadowlark Drive, a 33-year-old man was called in as a suspicious person and vehicle. He was contacted and it was found that his driver’s license status was revoked and was found to have two warrants. K9 alerted to the vehicle. Search yielded drug paraphernalia.

False Reporting / Warrant Arrest: Hwy 287 and CR 4, a 30-year-old woman and a 19-year-old man were arrested for warrants after being contacted on a traffic stop. The 19-year-old man used his cousin’s name to avoid being arrested.

Disturbance: 800 block of Franklin Avenue, a 55-year-old man was slapped in the leg by a 51-year-old man after bumping him with his shoulder.

Found Property: Hwy 287 and CR 4, a Motorola Droid was found during the above traffic stop.

Monday, March 21

Weaving/Fictitious Plates/No Insurance/Forgery, Resisting Arrest: I-25 and Hwy 56, the suspect vehicle was stopped for weaving. The unidentified driver provided a fake ID. The subject later resisted arrest and fled on foot. Taser was attempted, but was unsuccessful. A perimeter was setup and searched for the suspect.

Tuesday, March 22

Operated an Uninsured Vehicle/ Drove while License Denied/Defective Brake Light: Hwy 287 and Highway 56, a 29-year-old man was stopped for a defective bake light and following too close. His license was denied and he had no insurance for his vehicle.

Lost License Plate: 2200 block of Clayton Place, an employee called to report that a license plate on a Trailer had gone missing.

Wednesday, March 23

Snow, Snow and more Snow: Throughout out town, electrical power to most of town was out. Deputies spent most of their day pushing out several cars that were driving in this mess.

Thursday, March 24

Deputies directed traffic for several hours at the traffic lights on Hwy 287 at Hwy 56 and CR 17 due to the power outage. Met several citizens that appreciated what we were doing and met a few grumps.

Vehicle Crash with Injuries: CR 17 and Hwy 56, a Loveland driver was southbound on CR 17 and hit a patch of ice and losing control and her vehicle spun into the southbound lane. A Boulder driver was heading north when the other vehicle spun into his lane hitting her broadside. Both drivers received minor injuries which is more than I can say about both vehicles.

Vehicle Crash with Property Damage: 500 Block of CR 10E, a garbage truck hit a low cable line with his truck. No electrical lines damaged.

Theft: 1000 block of 2nd Street, a resident reported that his license plate had been stolen off his car sometime in the last month.

Criminal Mischief: 900 block of Kansas Avenue, it was reported that someone has been shooting and damaging the stop sign at Kansas and Longview with a pellet gun.

Fraud: 300 block of Turner Avenue, a resident called to report that she had purchased a vehicle from a craigslist advertisement. She met the seller at their residence in Berthoud. The seller represented himself as the person whose name is on the vehicle’s title. The seller made a bill of sale also representing himself as this man. The resident paid over $7,000 in cash for the vehicle. The resident attempted to register the vehicle at the Department of Motor Vehicle, but the title wasn’t clear. During the course of the investigation the deputy identified who the real seller is as a 27-year-old man.

Vehicle Crash with Property Damage: 1st Street and Welch Avenue, a driver was traveling northbound on 1st Street and attempted to make a left turn onto Welch Avenue. His vehicle struck another vehicle while making that turn. Both drivers exchanged information and both left the scene. They reported the accident to us the next day

Friday, March 25

Assist to Berthoud Fire: 200 block of 2nd Street, LCSO and Berthoud Fire responded to a mobile home that was on fire. Firefighters entered the burning home and pulled a woman out and she was transported by ambulance to MCR in critical condition. Be proud of your firefighters for what they do

Warrant Arrest Felony: 200 block of Alder Avenue Johnstown, a 47-year-old man was contacted by Johnstown Police Department and transported to Hwy 56 and I-25 where he was transferred to Larimer Deputy and arrested for his Felony warrant.

Saturday, March 26

Juvenile Problem: Berthoud Park, 3 boys were called in as suspicious, possibly smoking marijuana. Deputy made contact and the boys were not smoking marijuana but did have cigarettes.

Lots of complaints in town today. Neighbor problems, juvenile problems, and parking complaints.

Warrant Arrest: 200 block of S. 1st Street, a 25-year-old resident was arrested for an active warrant after he called to report a verbal disturbance between he and his father.

Monday, March 28

Warrant Arrest: 200 block of 1st Street, a 25-year-old man was arrested for a warrant after he called to report a verbal disturbance between him and his father.

Vehicle Crash: CR 13 and CR 6C, a driver of a vehicle hit a deer and caused minor damage to his vehicle. The deer was dispatched due to injury. 16-2386 Adams

Suspicious Circumstances / Trespass Notice: 400 block of Mountain Avenue, a business owner reported that a 29-year-old man was coming into the business and being inappropriate to her young female employees and making them uncomfortable. The man was given a written trespass notice.

Tuesday, March 29

Harassment: 1100 block of Jefferson Drive, a resident is receiving unwanted text messages from a 50-year-old homeless man. The resident tried to help this man and brought him to her residence, gave him money, and a vehicle. The resident decided to end the friendship after the man sent bizarre text messages. The man has continued to send text messages after being asked to stop several times. He showed up at her work in yesterday.

Found Property: 200 block of 7th Street, Berthoud Park, someone turned in a purse into Town hall. The purse was found on the ground next to a park bench at the park. Money, credit cards, and Id’s were still in the purse. Owner of the purse was located and the purse was returned to her. There are still honest people in this world!

Wednesday, March 30

Harassment / Child Abuse / Warrant Arrest: 200 block of 2nd Street, a 29-year-old man had a heated argument with his 26-year-old girlfriend and he pushed her. Two children, ages 1 and 5, were present during the altercation. The man also had a warrant and was booked into the jail.

DUI / Defective Headlights: 700 block of Mountain Avenue, a 57-year-old man was contacted on a traffic stop for driving without head lamps after sunset and was found to be DUI.

Vehicle Crash Non-Injury / DUI: 8th Street and Mountain Avenue, While Berthoud deputies were investigating the above DUI another vehicle traveling east bound crashed into a tree one block west of the traffic stop. A 39-year-old driver was contacted and was also found to be DUI.

Thursday, March 31

Suspicious Circumstances: 200 block of 1st Street, a resident called to report that he believes that he had found a snowplow of his that he believes was stolen.

Violation of Protection Order: 200 block of 2nd Street, a resident called to report that her ex-boyfriend, who she has a restraining order against, was outside her residence.
