Collapse of the Petraeus facade

Collapse of the Petraeus facade

As pointed out last week in this publication, General David Petraeus' reputation appears to be built upon a foundation of public relations sand, a foundation that is  quickly becoming quicksand. More and more publications and reporters are now beginning to take a hard look at the General and what they have written about him in the past. These are my new favorite words of the week.  They perfectly define the GOP and the right’s feelings, and the cause of those feelings, after last Tuesday’s re-election of President Obama. It has been quoted that the Romney camp was ... Full Story

Is President Obama a big spender?

The answer is a big yes and no. As Mark Twain said, “Figures don’t lie, but liars figure.” It is not exactly a case of “lying,” but rather a case of putting a spin on what the numbers mean. The two articles from Forbes Magazine presented below are excellent examples.     In “ Who Is The Smallest Government Spender Since Eisenhower?”  a May, 2012 article, Rick Ungar makes the case that it is Barack Obama. He includes a graph that shows the annualized growth in federal ... Full Story

Obama’s Disgrace

Obama’s Disgrace

by Sheldon Richman   The words could have been spoken by a government official in Orwell’s 1984: “Today, I am announcing several steps that broaden our ability to bring terrorists to justice, provide oversight for our actions, and ensure the humane treatment of detainees,” President Barack Obama said. What Obama actually did, the Washington Post reported, was to sign “an executive order ... that will create a formal system of indefinite detention for those held at the U.S. ... Full Story

Our Economy

Our Economy

To the Editor, This is a fine mess we’ve gotten ourselves into. Both our unemployment rate and our national debt are ‘way too high, and improving either one will make the other worse. Spending money to increase jobs will increase our debt. Laying off government workers to lower spending will increase unemployment. More unemployment = less consumer spending = fewer new jobs. If we do nothing, we stagnate. The Obama Administration is struggling mightily with this inherited mess, but ... Full Story
