Republicans hide from Nuns on the Bus

‘Nuns on the Bus’: Investigated but irrepressible U.S. Catholic bishops have launched a much-ballyhooed “Fortnight for Freedom” in protest against HHS’ birth control mandate and gay marriage, with masses at basilicas and sermons by such right-thinking prelates as Archbishop Charles Chaput of Philadelphia. The national event is being upstaged, however,  by “Nuns on the Bus,”  a 14-day, nine-city bus tour by four Catholic nuns that ... Full Story

Kill gays and non-virgins?

Kill gays and non-virgins?

By David Pakman       For years, I’ve been discussing common propaganda techniques used by conservative media to influence audience opinion in ways more reminiscent of brainwashing and indoctrination than informing and reporting. AlterNet’s Cynthia Boaz wrote a riveting exposé of 14 of these techniques, and every single one is easily recognizable a regular basis on Fox News, in conservative media of ... Full Story

I want to share my response: I believe, as our forefathers did, that you do not mix politics and religion. If you do, then the religious institution is indulging in political persuasion and should be taxed. I find it incredible in today's society that the church ... Full Story

Sex and the Catholic Church

Limbaugh, Santorum, Sex, and the Origins of the Roman Catholic Church By Steven Jonas In the year 312, the Roman Emperor Constantine saw some kind of a religious vision at some time before a battle in which he defeated his major rival at the time, Maxentius (1). Just what the nature of the vision was is unclear, but it did lead to Constantine's conversion to what became Roman Catholicism. This event functionally ended close to 300 years of an often underground ... Full Story

Contraception, Prosperity, and Quality of Life

Contraception, Prosperity, and Quality of Life

By Riane Eisler and Catherine Bohnsack Some politicians are still calling contraception a social evil. This is an astonishing claim in the 21st Century when all the evidence is that contraception is key to a more successful economy and a better quality of life – not only for individual women and their families, but for us all. Because contraception makes it possible to control the timing and spacing of pregnancy and childrearing, it gives both women and ... Full Story

Sex, Lies and Contraception

Sex, Lies and Contraception

by Gary Wamsley It seems odd that with all the problems facing our nation that the headlines of the past week have been about contraception. With millions of people out of work, millions losing their homes, robber barons trying to buy the government and the Middle East a tinderbox, how is it that something as personal and private as contraception has become the most important issue on the national stage? Much of it can be explained in the context of the battle for control of the White ... Full Story
