Why Civility Matters

Why Civility Matters

By: Larimer County Commissioner Steve Johnson I’m getting to the age where I can look back on several decades of public service and talk about the “good old days.” Old lawmakers love to talk about what the legislature used to be like when they served. A favorite topic is the lack of civility in today’s government and public discourse. While the lack of civility certainly isn’t new, we ought to be concerned about it today because it hampers progress on difficult issues and has a ... Full Story

Gardening for a Wildlife Habitat

Gardening Article By: Kathie Hopkins Colorado State University Extension Master Gardener in Larimer County Gardening for a Wildlife Habitat I heard him first; a high-pitched chirping sound that I didn’t recognize. When I looked up from weeding, I was stunned by the zooming creature that was enjoying the nectar from the Sunset Hyssop. He was a tiny, fast flyer, and had an iridescent green color on his back, so was probably a broad-tailed hummingbird (Selasphorus platycercus). My flower garden ... Full Story

Gardening Article By: Charleen Barr Colorado State University Extension Master Gardener in Larimer County Why Become a Seed Saver? Seed saving is as old as gardening. Long ago gardeners considered seed from their favorite plants to be treasured and worth saving from year to year. Today seeds and seedlings are relatively inexpensive and there are new plants to try every year. So why become a seed saver? Aside from the politics, capitalism and biotechnology arguments presented by growers, the ... Full Story

Hmmm, I thought, they’re not going to survive the winter. Oh well. And then I ... Full Story

Dear Editor, I am a fifth generation Larimer County native, one generation removed from the cattle business. I am concerned about Berthoud’s unneeded Growth Management Area (GMA) expansions and annexations outside of existing GMA boundaries. Berthoud’s current GMA is over 24,000 acres in size. Berthoud currently has 10,712 lots in some type of planning review (enough for a population of well over 30,000 people). The current GMA is large enough to make Berthoud similar in population size to ... Full Story
