Around Town: Everyone Loves a Parade

By Gary Wamsley
Berthoud Recorder

I think the Chamber of Commerce folks breathed a big sigh of relief on Saturday night. Berthoud Day turned out very well. Good weather, a large crowd, a great parade and many activities kept everyone entertained. Kudos to the chamber for all the planning that made it all work so well.

I started my day with the scouts’ pancake breakfast and then headed over to Fickel Park for the big Habitat 5K race and then took a stroll down Second Street to look at the parade forming. It is almost more interesting to see everyone lined up and making last minute preparations than it is to see them in the parade. I decided to watch the parade in its first block while everyone was still fresh and lively. There was a good crowd as far as I could see up Mountain Avenue.

After a walk around the park to see the entertainment and booths, I headed over to the ball field. We fielded a good team against the Territorial All Stars, but lost badly. We made only one tally in the first eight innings but managed to cross home several times in the bottom of the ninth, but it wasn’t enough.

The game was also a benefit for the Tinney family. A fund has been established to help them and we should have more information about it elsewhere in the paper.

Ian has been in the Longmont Hospital but I have been told that he will be moving to the Berthoud Living Center this week. That will make it easier for family and friends to visit him. We will try to keep you informed.

After another tour of Town Park I finished off the day by going to the BMX track. It was a busy place and a constant stream of riders. Stop by some time when the races are going as they should be every weekend for a while.

If you have been downtown this last week you might have seen another group trying to raise money. The group of young women is the Berthoud Youth Athletic Association Girls Softball Team. I think they are much better players than the Berthoud Blues and they have had a terrific season and earned a berth at the Triple Crown World Series in Park City, Utah.

They need travel money and have been going to local business trying to raise $7,000. I don’t think there is enough money there for them to reach their goal. They need the help of the community as well as local business. They may even need a fundraiser, perhaps a ball game between them and the Blues. It could be a great event. I would put my suit on for that. Of course, they would have to play by our rules, we need some handicap.

This is a great group of girls and if you would like to show your support you can send a check to, BYAA, PO Box 554, Berthoud CO 80513.

There are more things coming up this month. Don’t miss the chance to tour some of Berthoud’s historic homes. I’ll see you there and around town.
