Press Release: In the mid 1800s, nearly 70,000 members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints traveled across the plains from Nebraska and Iowa to the Salt Lake Valley. Most were in wagon trains, but ten companies of pioneers (totaling around 3,000 persons) pushed handcarts containing all of their possessions for more than 1,000 miles. Orlando Franklin Platzek March 3, 1914 – June 14, 2010 Orlando F. Platzek of Berthoud died Monday, 14 June 2010. He was 96. He was born in Crested Butte on 3 March 1914. He was a World War II combat veteran in the United States Navy. He was preceded in death by his wife Jean and his son Ronald. He is survived by his sister Lena James of Claremont, California; his son Roger (Sue) Platzek of Berthoud; and his daughter Rita (Mark) Larsen of Thornton.
